About the Job
The University of East London in partnership with STRABAG UK is launching a collaborative Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) to develop and commercialise an innovative, sustainable grout made from repurposed organic and earth‑based materials. The project aims to provide a first‑of‑its‑kind, low‑carbon tunnelling solution to help meet climate‑emergency and carbon‑reduction targets. A Civil Engineering and Materials KTP Associate will lead the project as a University employee while working primarily at STRABAG premises.
Technical Responsibilities

* Adapt existing Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) technology to accommodate the new grout.
* Deploy a novel risk‑based, probabilistic design approach.
* Implement a holistic design approach with diverse performance indicators (environmental, engineering, ecological, financial) and logistical targets (workability, timetable, material procurement and flow).
* Scale deployment of the grout for large‑scale, sensitive infrastructure projects.
* Oversee material adaptability, supplier diversification and compliance integration.
* Transfer methods, tools and techniques to STRABAG employees and stakeholders, both technical and non‑technical.
People and Change Management
* Collaborate effectively within STRABAG’s multi‑disciplinary teams.
* Assess and manage impact on existing staff and equipment.
* Embed the new technology across the organisation and wider company group.
Project Management
* Communicate knowledge to internal staff and clients.
* Deliver the project in line with requirements, standards and budget.
* Navigate challenges in designing and implementing new methods.
Required Qualifications
* Good honours degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Engineering Geology, or related field.
* Master of Science (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Tunnelling Engineering, Material Science, Concrete Technology, Engineering Geology or a relevant area.
* Strong knowledge of geotechnical engineering and/or engineering materials.
* Excellent written and oral English language skills.
* Independence and ability to work with little supervision.
* Creativity, initiative and problem‑solving skills.
* Effectiveness in interdisciplinary teamwork.
* Clear communication and professional report production.
* Time‑management skills and ability to meet project deliverables deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
* Ph.D. in a relevant subject area.
* Knowledge of grout technology.
* Awareness/knowledge of geochemistry.
* Experience with coding, programming or machine learning.
* Experience in Tunnel Boring Machines.
* Publication portfolio.
Benefits Package
* Opportunity to develop technical and commercial awareness.
* Leadership of a project to enhance long‑term career prospects.
* Dedicated development and training budget.
* Full access to university resources to complete the project.
