Job Description & Person Specification

Torbay Council Children’s Services is looking for dedicated, curious, and compassionate newly qualified social workers to join our well regarded ASYE programme in September. We are proud to have achieved a GOOD rating from Ofsted, recognising our commitment to providing excellent care and support for children and families whilst ensuring their voice is at the heart of all we do.

Our ASYE programme provides a caring, supportive and high‑quality learning and development environment designed to enable you to build strong foundations for your future career. We are seeking pro‑active, resilient, curious graduates, ideally with previous experience of a statutory Children’s services placement who want to extend their knowledge and skills to meet the Practice Standards for Child and Family Social Workers.

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and value uniqueness and diversity.

Highlights of what we can offer you

* Meaningful support that is developed alongside you and enhanced by regular restorative and reflective supervision.
* Protected allocations: a reduced allocation of children that gradually increases as you progress, enabling you to focus on developing your skills while gaining necessary exposure.
* Comprehensive four‑week induction programme: high‑quality learning opportunities, bespoke workshops, purposeful shadowing and peer learning networks.
* Protected Time for Development: dedicated time for reflection and professional growth with 2 additional days per month to experience social work across the whole of the child’s journey.
* Well‑being support: access to our well‑being offer and the support offered by the Learning Academy, Practice Educator and the ASYE Learning community.
* Year 2 (ASYT) support: protected allocations, peer support and a range of learning opportunities to further grow your social work career.
* Student Loan Allowance Scheme.
* Social Work England subscription reimbursement.
* Generous annual leave entitlement.
* Flexible/hybrid working.
* Local Government Pension Scheme.

In Torbay, we adopt a Restorative Practice approach in the way we work with children, young people and families and have been awarded Registered Restorative Organisation status – the first local authority in the UK to receive this. As a newly qualified social worker on our ASYE programme, you will access our comprehensive Restorative Practice learning opportunity, ensuring you are fully equipped to step into practice.

So, if you are looking for a hugely supportive, ambitious and determined place to start your social work career, you will find it all in Torbay.

We will be opening our Assessment centre week commencing 1st June 2026. Candidates will showcase their skills, knowledge, talents and selves through interview, presentation and practice‑based group discussion.
