Job Description
Michell Instruments, part of the DwyerOmega (DO) Group, is looking for an experienced Health, Safety & Environmental (HS&E) Manager to join our Ely manufacturing site.
This is a hands-on, site-based role where you’ll play a critical part in maintaining and enhancing an already well-established HS&E management system, while helping to shape a proactive, positive safety culture aligned to wider global ESG objectives.
Reporting directly to the Plant Manager, with a dotted line to the Global Head of ESG, you’ll lead all HS&E activity at our Ely site. You’ll work closely with site leadership and employees, supporting day-to-day operations while driving continuous improvement across health, safety, and environmental performance.
This role would suit a safety-focused professional who enjoys being visible on the shop floor, influencing others, and making a tangible impact.
Key Responsibilities
Health & Safety
* Lead, develop, and continuously improve site health & safety policies, procedures, and safe systems of work
* Ensure full compliance with UK health & safety legislation and best practice
* Conduct and oversee risk assessments, COSHH assessments, and HS&E training requirements
* Lead incident, accident, and near-miss investigations, ensuring effective corrective and preventive actions
* Monitor performance through audits, inspections, and reporting
* Act as the primary HS&E point of contact for the Ely site
Environmental Management
* Manage site environmental compliance, including waste, energy usage, and GHG emissions
* Maintain and improve environmental management systems
* Monitor and report environmental performance internally and externally
* Liaise with regulators and external auditors as required
Training & Culture
* Develop and deliver HS&E training and awareness programmes
* Support HR with HS&E input into new starter onboarding
* Promote a proactive, transformative safety culture through coaching and visible leadership
* Support managers and supervisors in fulfilling their HS&E responsibilities
Contractor & Stakeholder Management
* Ensure contractors comply with site HS&E standards and legal requirements
* Review contractor RAMS prior to work commencing
* Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to drive improved HS&E outcomes
Reporting & Continuous Improvement
* Maintain accurate HS&E records and documentation
* Prepare reports for site leadership, including performance trends and improvement plans
* Identify and implement opportunities for continuous improvement and best practice
About You
Essential
* Proven experience in a Health, Safety & Environmental role
* Strong working knowledge of UK H&S and environmental legislation
* Confident communicator with the ability to influence at all levels
* IOSH Managing Safely
* NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent)
* Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint)
* Able to work independently while collaborating effectively with site teams
* A proactive, learning‑oriented mindset with a passion for safety
Desirable
* Experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment
* Experience delivering training or workshops
* NCRQ Diploma (or equivalent)
* ISEP (formerly IEMA) environmental qualification
* Experience working with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems
