NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.

The role:

The Podiatry Service aims to deliver high quality care to patients and their carers.

The key responsibilities of the service are to provide triage, assessment, diagnosis and treatment to a diverse range of conditions and patient types in a variety of environments. There is also a key role in health promotion.

Podiatry focuses on supporting patients to remain independently mobile and pain free while Generic Band 6 NHSGG&C Podiatry Service 07.04.16 2 promoting self care wherever possible. The aim is to provide Podiatry care and foot health education to those who need it most by a team of skilled practitioners who are constantly earning and developing.

Podiatry services are patient centred and needs led with clinical assessment and diagnosis leading to patient management plans tailored to meet the needs of individual patients. There is a focus on rehabilitation with a self care element included in treatment plans where appropriate

The service is provided by a range of practitioners as follows

1. Podiatry Assistants
2. Podiatrists
3. Specialist Podiatrists in specific specialist area
4. Advanced Podiatrists
5. Principal Podiatrists

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

Permanent, Full time

Shettleston Health Centre

Shift Pattern - Monday - Thursday 08:30-16:30, Friday 08:30-16:00

Key responsibilities:

The post holder will require to undertake the following duties and responsibilities within the scope and standards of practice as agreed by the Podiatry service, locally and nationally agreed policies and procedures and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). The post holder will be expected to function as an independent practitioner and also as an integral part of a team. They will be able to provide evidence of relevant post registration continuing professional development.

6. Management, planning and organising a caseload to meet the podiatric and medical needs of the patient
7. Management, provision and planning of patient care in a variety of settings
8. Full assessment and diagnoses of patients podiatric conditions in order to establish a treatment/ management plan
9. Responsible for developing specialist programmes of care for patients with complex podiatric and medical conditions
10. Assessment of patients associated medical conditions.
11. Ability to work with a diverse group of patients incorporating all age groups with complex medical needs e.g Learning Disabilities, Diabetes, vascular disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis
12. Reassessment of patients within agreed time-scales
13. Communication with other Health Care Professionals regarding a patients treatment/ management plan in accordance with the Data Protection Act
14. Management of a clinically based and or domiciliary caseload
15. Ensure equipment is suitable for use e.g. remove and replace nail dust bags, undertake risk assessments.
16. Delegation of tasks to Podiatrists and Podiatry Assistants as identified in the patients management plan including appropriate discharge of patients
17. Participate in specialist clinics utilising other specialist podiatrists when required
18. Maintain adequate provisions of medicaments/dressings and be responsible for their safe keeping
19. Provision of statistical information relating to clinical activity
20. Active involvement in clinical governance including audit and service improvement Generic Band 6 NHSGG&C Podiatry Service 07.04.16 4
21. Supervision and development of staff and students
22. Responsible for clinical supervision for Podiatrists and Podiatry Assistants
23. Responsible for clinical support for Podiatrists and Podiatry Assistants
24. Provide advice and support to carers and families
25. Discharge of patients to carers using appropriate risk assessment & clinical judgement, advice and health education
26. Comply with Departmental Policies, Procedures and protocols and with the Health Professions Council (HCPC) Standards of Proficiency for Chiropodists/Podiatrists, maintaining valid HCPC registration
27. Order clinical and other supplies ensuring effective stock control and maintenance

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

Qualifications/ Training

28. Degree or diploma in Podiatry
29. Current HPC registration
30. Local analgesia certificate

Experience

31. Demonstrate evidence based clinical knowledge
32. Ability to demonstrate experience of working with patients with complex medical and podiatric conditions in a wide variety of clinical and non clinical settings
33. Post graduate experience or equivalent in specialist area

Knowledge skills and abilities

34. Demonstrate Podiatry specific CPD portfolio
35. Have a working knowledge of appraisal and PDP systems
36. Demonstrate Podiatry specific CPD portfolio

Personal qualities

37. Ability to work on own and as a team member
38. Ability to prioritise, plan and organise workload
39. Ability to demonstrate effective clinical leadership

Other requirements

40. Basic computer and word processing skills
41. Regular updates in:- Moving and handling Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and anaphylaxis Fire Safety Infection Control
