Researcher in climate change attribution

Oxford
University of Oxford
Posted: 5 July
Offer description

Smith School, School of Geography and the Environment, South Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3QY Reporting to Dr Rupert Stuart-Smith, Senior Research Fellow in Climate Science and the Law, the postholder will be a computationally proficient climate scientist who will work on attribution and projections of climate change impacts on human health, with particular focus on climate change hotspots in southern Africa, the Andes, and southern Europe. Working within a multidisciplinary research group at the University of Oxford, the postholder will conduct scientific research that refines existing methods, sheds light on the impacts of climate change in understudied regions, and informs adaptation and legal responses to climate change impacts. The post holder will conduct climate change attribution and projection analyses, in collaboration with colleagues with expertise in modelling health impacts. This research will include analyses of the effects of climate change on existing and future impacts (attribution and projections) on human health. The project will examine the contribution of individual emitters of greenhouse gases to the health impacts of climate change, the impact of different future emissions pathways (including those that temporarily overshoot the Paris Agreement’s temperature goal) on health, evaluating the applicability of different methods for conducting attribution studies, and the development of policy-relevant health indicators. The post is ideal for a candidate who can demonstrate strong computational skills and aptitude for statistical analysis of climate data. The successful candidate will primarily conduct analyses of the meteorological impacts of climate change but gain opportunities to work with interdisciplinary methods such as epidemiological and agricultural models. They will join a vibrant and growing research environment that builds on the University of Oxford’s expertise in climate science, attribution science, and interdisciplinary research at the interface of climate change science and law. The post holder will work with the PI, colleagues at the University of Oxford, and collaborators from the ‘TACTIC’ project funded by the Wellcome Trust. The TACTIC project commences in March 2025 and is a consortium led by Ana M. Vicedo-Cabrera (University of Bern). This post is fixed-term until 29 February 2028 and offered on a full-time basis.
