What you'll do:

As the tax specialist in this growing business based in Lancashire, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the organisation's approach to tax compliance and financial excellence. Your day-to-day activities will involve close collaboration with colleagues across various teams as you take ownership of all aspects of the tax function. You will be responsible for reviewing complex VAT returns both domestically and internationally, managing employment tax processes, addressing ad-hoc queries from stakeholders, and acting as the main point of contact for external advisors. Your proactive approach will see you identifying areas of risk, keeping abreast of legislative changes, and driving improvements that enhance efficiency within the finance department. Success in this role will come from your ability to build strong relationships internally and externally while delivering high-quality outcomes that support both regulatory compliance and business objectives.
* Take full responsibility for the tax function by managing both strategic initiatives and day-to-day operational tasks with a hands-on approach.
* Collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders across multiple departments and subsidiaries to ensure robust tax compliance and implementation of best practices throughout the business.
* Act as the primary liaison with HMRC, statutory auditors, and external tax advisors, supported by the Group FP&A Manager to facilitate smooth communication and compliance.
* Review UK and overseas VAT returns thoroughly, manage associated queries, and ensure all submissions are accurate and timely.
* Oversee processes related to other tax obligations such as Employment Tax.
* Identify potential risks within the business's tax requirements by maintaining the Group's risk register and implementing measures to mitigate these risks where necessary.
* Investigate ad-hoc tax issues as they arise and provide clear, well-informed recommendations to management for effective resolution.
* Stay up-to-date with changes in tax legislation, assessing their impact on the business and communicating relevant updates to key stakeholders.
* Support continuous improvement initiatives within the finance team by contributing to automation projects and enhancing processes related to tax management.
What you bring:

You will bring proven experience from previous roles focused on tax - particularly those involving VAT returns, employment taxes, or similar areas of responsibility. Your technical knowledge will be underpinned by formal qualifications such as ATT/ACA/CTA or equivalent credentials. Beyond technical expertise, your interpersonal skills will enable you to communicate clearly with both internal teams and external advisors while fostering an atmosphere of trust and cooperation. You will demonstrate exceptional organisational skills when managing multiple priorities simultaneously without compromising accuracy or quality. A natural problem-solver who enjoys learning new things, you will thrive on tackling complex issues head-on while always seeking ways to improve existing processes. Your commitment to continuous professional development ensures you remain up-to-date with evolving legislation so that your advice remains relevant and reliable.
* Demonstrated experience working in a dedicated tax role with specific exposure to VAT and employment tax responsibilities within a commercial environment.
* Proficiency in using ERP systems for financial management purposes; experience with SAP is particularly advantageous but not essential.
* Comprehensive understanding of UK tax regulations supported by relevant qualifications such as ATT, ACA or CTA (or equivalent).
* Excellent communication skills enabling you to build positive relationships with colleagues at all levels as well as external partners such as auditors or HMRC representatives.
* Exceptional organisational abilities combined with meticulous attention to detail when handling complex data sets or preparing documentation.
* A genuine willingness to learn new concepts quickly while embracing challenges as opportunities for personal growth.
* Ability to assess risk objectively within a financial context and implement practical solutions that safeguard compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
* Experience supporting process improvements or automation initiatives within finance functions would be beneficial but not mandatory.
