Overview
As a Casual Mortuary Assistant, you’ll provide flexible, ad‑hoc support to ensure the safe, respectful and compliant handling of deceased patients within the County Mortuary. Working as part of the Coroners, Registration and Bereavement Service, you’ll help maintain smooth day‑to‑day operations, uphold high professional standards, and ensure dignity for every individual in your care. This casual role is ideal for someone who can offer availability at short notice and is comfortable with variable working patterns.
Responsibilities
Your work will focus on supporting mortuary operations as and when required. You’ll be responsible for the careful transportation of deceased patients to the County Mortuary, ensuring all possessions and records are handled accurately and respectfully. Inside the mortuary, you’ll assist colleagues with safe movement and preparation tasks, help maintain a clean and compliant environment, and ensure samples and clinical waste are managed correctly.
As a casual worker, you may be asked to support:
* Planned cover (e.g., sickness, seasonal pressures)
* Unplanned or short‑notice operational needs
* Weekend or bank holiday work, typically between 8am–4pm, though occasional later support may be required
You’ll also contribute to seasonal or emergency duties when needed, providing steady, reliable support in a service that depends on calm focus and professionalism.
Responsibilities continued
You’ll be someone who can remain calm, professional and compassionate in sensitive situations. You’re comfortable working independently, but also value being part of a supportive team. You bring strong attention to detail, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with care.
What you’ll have
* A full driving licence and confidence operating specialist vehicles
* The ability to carry out regular manual handling tasks safely
* A good standard of general education (GCSE or equivalent)
* An understanding of Health & Safety and HTA compliance, or a willingness to learn
* Flexibility to accept work on an ad‑hoc basis, sometimes at short notice, including weekends and bank holidays
* Experience in a mortuary, funeral service or healthcare environment is helpful but not essential – what matters most is your professionalism, resilience and commitment to treating every individual with dignity
Please Note
This is a casual, non‑rota role. Hours are not guaranteed and will vary depending on service needs.
