Professional Duties of a Teacher
Regulations
(NORTHERN IRELAND) 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5
1. Exercise of general professional duties
2. A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require:
* (a) if employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal;
* (b) if employed by a board without a fixed school assignment, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school where required to work.

2. A teacher shall perform, in accordance with reasonable directions, such particular duties as may be assigned by the principal or the board.
Key Responsibilities
1. Planning
* Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
* Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work;
* Assessing, recording, and reporting on pupils' development, progress, and attainment.
3. General
* Promoting the well-being of pupils;
* Providing advice on educational, social, and career matters;
* Making records and reports on pupils' personal and social needs;
* Communicating with parents and external bodies;
* Participating in meetings related to these areas.
4. Assessment/Reporting
* Providing assessments, reports, and references on pupils, ensuring confidentiality where necessary;
5. Staff Development
* Participating in staff development and performance reviews;
* Reviewing and improving teaching methods and programs;
* Collaborating on curriculum development and pastoral arrangements.
6. Discipline/Health and Safety
* Maintaining discipline and safeguarding health and safety;
* Participating in curriculum and administrative meetings.
7. Public Examinations
* Preparing pupils for examinations and assessing their performance;
8. Management Activities/Administration
* Contributing to staff recruitment, development, and management;
* Participating in curriculum, organizational, and pastoral management;
* Handling administrative tasks including supervision and resource management.
9. Working Hours and Days
* Availability for 195 days per year, with specific hours and break requirements;
10. Staff Cover
* Supervising pupils during teacher absences, with specific conditions based on school size;
11. Additional Notes
* This job description is subject to review and may include other duties appropriate to the grade;

Section 1 - Essential Criteria
* Qualifications: Recognized teaching qualification for Northern Ireland;
* Experience: Minimum 3 years’ teaching Foundation Stage within last 8 years, supporting diverse learners including those with SEN, and experience with digital media;
* Registration: Must be registered with GTCNI before starting.
Section 2 - Additional Essential Criteria
* Knowledge: Curriculum, safeguarding, SEND, assessment methods, IT systems;
* Skills: Classroom management, inclusive teaching, teamwork, problem-solving, communication;
* Values: Alignment with school ethos, as detailed on school website.
Section 3 - Desirable Criteria
* Additional experience such as teaching P1, working in job share, curriculum development, or extra-curricular activities;
