Overview

NHS Supply Chain currently has an opportunity for a Legal Business Partner to join our team during an exciting period of transformation, working to make it easier for the NHS to put patients first.

This role sits within the Procurement Legal team and plays a key part in supporting commercial activity across the organisation by providing expert, pragmatic legal advice on complex procurement and contractual matters. Reporting to the Head of Legal Procurement, the role partners closely with senior leaders and Category teams, acting as the first point of contact for legal support within its designated commercial category. It leads on advising procurement strategy, contract structures, governance and contract management, owning a high‑accountability portfolio of work and providing clear, commercially focused insight that enables confident, well‑informed decision‑making. Through proactive business partnering and trusted legal leadership, the role helps embed legal considerations early, manage risk appropriately, ensure compliance with organisational policies and governance frameworks, and support the smooth progression of commercial activity that ultimately contributes to effective delivery of patient care across the NHS.

Responsibilities

* Provide expert, commercially focused legal advice on complex procurement and contractual matters, owning a high‑impact portfolio that supports confident, timely senior‑level decision‑making.
* Act as the first point of contact for senior members of the Category team, embedding legal considerations early in planning and decision‑making and enabling strategies to progress efficiently.
* Advise on procurement strategy, contract structures and contract management, drafting and reviewing commercial agreements to improve contracting outcomes and manage risk effectively.
* Build trusted partnerships with senior leaders and cross‑functional teams, offering pragmatic, forward‑looking legal insight that strengthens governance, compliance and organisational risk management.
* Support continuous improvement and innovation by identifying efficiencies, improving legal and commercial workflows, and adapting to emerging legal and regulatory developments.

Benefits

* Hybrid working opportunities, giving you the flexibility to work collaboratively in the office and remotely.
* Annual bonus schemes, long service and colleague recognition awards.
* 27 days holiday plus bank holidays.
* In‑house training, support and access to external qualifications to maximise your potential.
* Paid well‑being leave (1 day) and free access to the 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme.
* Generous pension scheme (with us contributing 12% when you contribute 6%).
* Flexible Benefits Scheme where you can choose from Life Insurance, Critical Illness Cover, Income Protection, Health Cash Plan, Dental Insurance, and additional pension contributions.
* Paid volunteering leave (2 days).
* Discounts from the Blue Light Card and NHS Discounts.

Qualifications

* Proven legal experience with a strong working knowledge of public procurement and/or public sector law, delivering clear, compliant advice on complex procurement and contractual matters.
* Strong commercial and procurement insight, providing effective input into procurement strategy, contract structures and contract management while balancing legal risk with commercial objectives.
* Excellent analytical judgement, with the ability to interpret complex, ambiguous information and use data or reporting tools to provide clear insight, identify risks and options, and support senior decision‑making.
* Demonstrated ability to build trusted, influential relationships with senior stakeholders and cross‑functional teams, embedding legal considerations early in planning and acting as a pragmatic, solutions‑focused business partner.
* Highly organised, resilient and self‑directed, capable of managing a varied, high‑accountability caseload independently, adapting to changing priorities and maintaining strong ethical standards and professionalism.
