Overview

Are you an experienced geotechnical engineer with a passion for monitoring and safeguarding critical infrastructure? Join our team and take the lead in managing the performance and condition of geotechnical monitoring and instrumentation across earthworks, drainage, and associated assets. In this role, you’ll provide expert guidance to stakeholders and customers, ensuring our assets are safe, reliable, and resilient.


Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities

* Lead the monitoring and instrumentation, assessment and risk management of geotechnical and drainage assets.
* Undertake the review of geotechnical monitoring and instrumentation of schemes specifying necessary maintenance and renewal work.
* Monitor trends for asset condition, failures and failure precursors and maintenance and renewal work. Ensure geotechnical and drainage risks are mitigated, and specify and undertake appropriate action with comprehensive records.
* Develop route specific plans for monitoring and instrumentation of assets including all maintenance and renewal activities and asset strategies, providing the prioritised investment work bank. Manage the inclusion of all investment items into appropriate programmes and track through to completion including approval of changes.
* Support the RAM in providing the business case and sponsoring geotechnical monitoring and instrumentation of renewals and enhancement projects.
* Act as engineering authority for technical approval and acceptance of deliverables associated with monitoring and instrumentation activities, and Designer under CDM where appropriate. Review technical development of projects to ensure monitoring and instrumentation requirements are sufficient and any changes are agreed.
* Support investigations into significant failures that affect the safety and performance of assets. Implement actions to mitigate the risk of recurrence.
* Support the RAM in providing geotechnical monitoring and instrumentation support to senior management of Operations and Customer Services and Maintenance.
* Liaise with asset management groups or external organisations to review monitoring and instrumentation projects and third-party proposals to optimise engineering activity across the railway infrastructure system, resolve critical technical issues and manage risks.
* Undertake the production of route specific asset management plans.
* Lead the engineering input to geotechnical monitoring and instrumentation contracts. Investigate and resolve technical and quality issues with suppliers.


Essential: Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications

* Incorporated Engineer
* Degree in a relevant subject or equivalent
* Membership of relevant professional institution
* Substantial experience of railway civil engineering, with proven abilities in geotechnical and drainage asset maintenance and renewals
* Sound knowledge of geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring principles and practices
* Experience with installation of monitoring instruments, data collection, and troubleshooting
* Knowledge of data acquisition systems, analysis, and interpretation
* Experience with total station surveying units and various monitoring read-out units (e.g. inclinometer, strain gauges, tiltmeters) in geotechnical monitoring
* Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
* Understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques
* Experience in Construction Design and Management Regulations


Desirable

* Chartered Engineer or equivalent geotechnical qualification
* Understanding of INSAR / Satellite capabilities for monitoring
* Experience in the use of GIS software systems
