Applications are invited from enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals with specialist experience in haematology, blood transfusion for a full time Band 6 post to work in our modern and well-equipped Haematology/Blood Transfusion Laboratory at Royal Preston Hospital.

** Please Note ** to be recruited straight to Band 6, applicants will be a HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist with a Specialist Portfolio in Haematology/ Blood Transfusion. You will be asked to provide proof of qualifications prior to shortlisting/interview

Main duties of the job

Our Haematology and Blood Transfusion department is based at Royal Preston Hospital, which is a Major Trauma Centre serving Preston, South Ribble and Chorley. The site provides specialist Plastics, Neurology, Renal and Oncology services along with routine services.

Our major equipment comprises Sysmex XN and CS 5100 series analysers and we use the TOSOH G11 for Haemoglobinopathy Screening. Automation in Transfusion is provided by Diamed IH1000 analysers. The Trust has remote access Haemobank fridges which allows remote electronic issue of blood units. You will be expected to perform routine and specialist procedures.

You will be based at Royal Preston Hospital, however you will be required to work across sites at both Royal Preston and Chorley hospitals. The role can sometimes be quite physical, with moderate moving and handling requirements, therefore you will need to able to move around the laboratory and assist in the movement of loads. You will be expected to work a 37.5 hr/ week (average) shift rota pattern that includes daytime, evenings, overnight, weekends and Bank Holidays once you have achieved competence during a satisfactory probationary period, for which appropriate AFC enhancements will be paid.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties will include, but not be limited to:

1. Performs work duties to the standards required as a HCPC Biomedical Scientist
2. Undertake the correct procedures for the handling of specimens, pre and post analysis.
3. Maintain and operate equipment used in the preparation and analysis of specimens.
4. Perform a range of laboratory tests autonomously and demonstrate an understanding of the scientific basis for tests and the disease processes under investigation.
5. Demonstrate awareness of factors affecting sample integrity, risks associated with the sample reagents, or method and other tests indicated by the outcome of the analysis.
6. Use the main laboratory computer system in accordance with service requirements

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria

7. Degree (or equivalent) suitable for HCPC registration
8. HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist
9. Completed Specialist Portfolio or equivalent
10. Uses continuing professional development as a means of selfdevelopment

Desirable criteria

11. IBMS membership
12. NBTS Introduction to Blood Transfusion
13. Completion of relevant external analyser courses
14. NBTS Transfusion Specialist certificate
15. BBTS Transfusion Specialist certificate

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

16. Experience as a specialist in a clinical pathology laboratory
17. Understanding of health and safety legislation pertaining to clinical laboratories
18. Experience of the components of a quality management system
19. Experience of dealing with cold chain issue

Desirable criteria

20. Problem solving ability
21. Extended specialist experience e.g blood film review, non-routine coagulation
22. Experience of working as a BMS in a Blood Sciences
23. Experience of UKAS/ MHRA inspections
