Criminal Duty Solicitor – Shrewsbury
Are you an accredited Criminal Duty Solicitor looking for your next career move? This is an excellent opportunity to join a respected and growing criminal defence team, where you’ll handle a wide variety of cases, represent clients in court and provide essential legal advice when it matters most.
About the Role:
As a Criminal Duty Solicitor, you’ll play a vital role in defending and supporting clients across a broad spectrum of criminal law matters. This is a dynamic and rewarding position, offering the chance to work on high-profile cases while developing your skills in a supportive environment.
Key Responsibilities:
* Provide immediate legal advice and representation to clients at police stations (including 24/7 rota coverage)
* Represent clients at Magistrates’ Court hearings – including bail applications, plea hearings, trials and sentencing
* Manage your own caseload across a variety of offences such as theft, drug-related crime, assault, domestic violence and public order offences
* Draft and prepare essential legal documents, including case summaries, briefs to counsel and witness statements
* Work closely with the CPS, police, courts and probation services
* Ensure compliance with Legal Aid Agency (LAA) regulations and maintain accurate client records
* Support and mentor junior members of the team, including paralegals and trainees
* Keep up to date with developments in criminal law and legal aid requirements
Your Requirements:
We are seeking a motivated and dedicated solicitor with:
* Qualified Solicitor status (England & Wales) with a valid practising certificate
* Duty Solicitor Accreditation under the Legal Aid Agency’s Criminal Litigation Accreditation Scheme
* Proven experience in criminal defence, with strong advocacy skills
* Excellent knowledge of current criminal law and procedures
* Ability to manage a busy and varied caseload independently
* Willingness to participate in evening and weekend duty rotas
* Strong communication skills and a client-focused approach
* Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
