Consultant Psychiatrist – Havering Mental Health

Overview
Full‑time Community Adult Consultant Psychiatrist in the Havering Mental Wellness Team North Central (MHWT‑N) based at 137‑145 Church Road, Harold Wood RM3 0SH. The role combines clinical leadership, direct patient care, and collaboration across the mental health care pathway. You will help shape service development, support staff, and champion the Trust values of kindness, respect, and partnership with communities.
Main duties
Provide clinical leadership and supervision to the multidisciplinary team.
Deliver direct patient care to adult patients and their families.
Coordinate with inpatient, crisis, and other community consultant psychiatrists.
Develop links across the mental health pathway and primary care networks in Havering.
Set up and manage own and team workload in line with Trust protocols.
Maintain risk management, patient safety, and clinical governance.
Deliver teaching and supervision to medical students, trainees, and team members.
Complete patient‑related administrative tasks and use the Trust’s electronic case record system.
Act as line manager for resident doctors and collaborate with senior colleagues for safe, high‑quality care.
Contribute to service development, business planning, and clinical leadership within the service and directorate.
Job responsibilities
The post is a full‑time substantive position with potential for flexible working, job share, or fixed‑term arrangements. The role includes 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) with 7.5 Direct Clinical Contact activities (DCC) and 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs).
On‑call: Senior Psychiatrist on‑call rota covering out of hours for Mental Health Services in NELFT, adult and older adult services. 1:40 rota with 3% Category A salary supplement. Daytime Section 136 rota: 1 day every 3 months; lead on emergency Mental Health Act assessments on the Goodmayes site.
Accountability: Professionally accountable to the Chief Medical Officer via the Associate Medical Director for Havering and operationally accountable to the Associate Medical Director and Integrated Care Director, ultimately to the Chief Executive Officer.
People and supervision
The team includes:
3 whole‑time equivalent (WTE) Consultants
1 WTE SAS Doctor
1–2 WTE Core/GP Trainee
Medical students and Physician Associate students on clinical placement
Qualifications and experience
Eligibility for the Specialist Register for Psychiatry (or within 6 months of CCT).
Approved Clinician status or eligibility.
Comprehensive understanding of biological, psychological, and social determinants of mental health disorders.
Experience with evidence‑based treatment approaches.
Awareness of NHS and NELFT strategic priorities and clinical governance.
Skills and communication
Effective communication with colleagues, senior managers, and clinical leads.
Clear conveyance of complex patient information to support collaborative decision‑making.
