Offer description

The Environment Agency is fully committed to having an inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We actively seek, embrace, and live diversity for the benefit of our staff, communities, and environment.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to work alongside our technical lead to manage the waste exemptions regime. Waste Exemption (WEX) charges, implemented on 1 July 2025, are designed to bring environmental, regulatory, and business benefits, but will also increase workload in E&B. The successful candidate will help establish a sustainable WEX regime and manage it like other chargeable regulatory regimes.

Key responsibilities include:

* Managing WEX income, business planning, and resourcing; brokering organizational priorities; measuring and tracking performance.
* Collaborating with our Ruby Digital Team on the development and enhancement of online registration, our national customer contact centre, and payment systems.
* Working with Defra, NRW, trade bodies, and networks to align policy development with operational delivery.
* Supporting exemptions reform at critical milestones and building resilience within the WEX team.

Ultimately, you will own all aspects of WEX, supporting the wider team’s work and priorities.

The team:

You will join our national Waste Treatment and Transfer team, which leads on biowaste, non-hazardous and hazardous waste, metals, fire prevention, and waste exemptions. Our culture promotes positivity, inclusivity, and support, utilizing evidence, expertise, engagement, and innovation to enhance delivery, influence policy, and secure resources.

Experience and skills required:

* Ability to work effectively with diverse backgrounds and encourage diversity considerations in work.
* Knowledge of waste regulation from an operational perspective.
* Understanding of the current regulatory system, including its strengths and weaknesses.
* Business management skills.
* Proven track record of delivering outcome-focused work.
* Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
* Experience in collaborative work to achieve goals.

We offer development opportunities and training. The role is flexible/hybrid with an EA Office base. Some travel may be required. Please review the Candidate/Additional Information Pack for details.

For inquiries, contact methane.action@environment-agency.gov.uk. Applications are assessed via competency questions, with interviews via MS Teams within two weeks of closing. We may hold your details for 6 months for potential future opportunities.

We are committed to diversity and inclusion, supporting flexible working, job sharing, and guaranteed interviews for disabled applicants.
