Catching Lives is looking for Board members to provide strategic support and guidance and excellent governance of our charity's work with people who are homeless in Canterbury and East Kent.

What difference will you make?

The Chair and Trustees play a pivotal role in setting and achieving the strategic plans of our charity. Our Trustees make sure that Catching Lives delivers on its mission to help people find safe places to live and the opportunity to lead fulfilling lives. This is an opportunity to make an important contribution to a small charity that needs people with your skills and experience to continue providing its services to some of our community's most disadvantaged individuals.

What are we looking for?

Previous experience of charity governance is essential for the role of Chair, while for general Trustees we are interested in a range of professional skills. We value lived experience of issues such as homelessness and substance dependency, as well as experience in managing or commissioning services for people around these issues. We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our Board. Knowledge and understanding of charity governance issues. For the role of Chair, previous charity governance experience is essential. Understanding of, and respect for, confidentiality. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Flexible and positive approach. Willingness and ability to understand and accept their responsibilities and liabilities as Trustees and to act in the best interests of the organisation. Ability to think creatively and strategically, exercise good, independent judgement and work effectively as a Trustee. Effective communication skills and willingness to participate actively in discussion. A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. Enthusiasm for our vision and mission. Commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership. We want the board to reflect the people we work with and to have a range of different voices within it. We know that diverse groups of people make better decisions and that’s why we are particularly keen to hear from under-represented groups including people from global majority backgrounds, LGBTQ+ people, people with special educational needs and/or disabilities, people with lived experience of homelessness and/or addiction either personally or through a close family member, non-graduates and first-in-family graduates.

What will you be doing?

Catching Lives is led by a friendly, engaged Board who provide a balance of support and challenge to the CEO. Our Board currently comprises 7 trustees, two of whom will step down at the end of their respective terms in November 2025. We hope to appoint 3-5 trustees from this recruitment process, including a new Chair. We hold 5 Board meetings a year, plus an AGM and away day, either in our day centre or at another location near Canterbury city centre. Trustees usually meet in person, with the option of occasionally joining remotely. Trustees might sometimes be part of task and finish groups. There are also opportunities to attend community events on behalf of Catching Lives and to visit the day centre. Catching Lives is an award-winning homelessness charity with a strong reputation and local presence in East Kent. We support people who are homeless or insecurely housed, 7 days a week. Our vision is of a society where everyone has a safe place to live and the opportunity to lead a fulfilling life. We work to achieve this by supporting people at our Canterbury day centre, providing essential facilities (including food, laundry, showers) and individual support to improve housing, health and social connection. We also run an activities programme including arts, crafts, creative writing, cookery, gardening and yoga.
