A highly respected 11–18 school in Reading, rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, is seeking to appoint a dedicated and talented Music Teacher to join their thriving Performing Arts Department from January 2026. This is a full-time, permanent position at a school recognised nationally for its exceptional academic results, vibrant cultural life, and commitment to creative excellence.

About the Role

The successful teacher will deliver Music across KS3–KS5, fostering a love of performance, composition, and musical analysis among students. They will plan and teach engaging lessons that develop confidence, technique, and a deep understanding of music theory, history, and appreciation.

The school encourages both classical and contemporary approaches to music education, with equal emphasis on performance and creativity. The postholder will prepare students for GCSE and A-Level Music examinations, supporting them through all aspects of composition, listening, and performance assessments.

In addition to classroom teaching, the appointed teacher will play a key role in enriching the school’s musical life. This includes directing ensembles, choirs, and orchestras; coordinating concerts and productions; and supporting the delivery of school musicals, house events, and festivals. Collaboration is highly valued, and the successful candidate will work closely with peripatetic instrumental staff, fellow performing arts colleagues, and visiting professionals to ensure music continues to thrive as a cornerstone of school life.

Key Responsibilities

* Deliver high-quality Music lessons that inspire creativity and intellectual curiosity.

* Prepare students effectively for GCSE and A-Level examinations, maintaining high standards of achievement and participation.

* Lead or assist in running choirs, orchestras, and instrumental ensembles.

* Organise and support school concerts, recitals, and large-scale productions, both on and off-site.

* Incorporate music technology, notation software, and recording tools into teaching and performance.

* Encourage student engagement through extracurricular activities such as music clubs, workshops, and masterclasses.

* Contribute to the ongoing development of the Music curriculum and departmental planning.

* Participate in professional development and whole-school initiatives to ensure continued teaching excellence.

About the School

The school is one of the most successful in the region, combining academic rigour with a deep appreciation of the arts. Rated ‘Outstanding’ in every category by Ofsted, it is celebrated for its supportive environment, outstanding teaching standards, and consistently excellent examination results.

The Music Department occupies a dedicated suite of facilities, including rehearsal studios, soundproof practice rooms, a professional recording studio, and a fully equipped performance auditorium. The department has a proud record of excellence in both curricular and co-curricular music, with students regularly achieving national recognition in competitions, choirs, and orchestras.

Music plays a central role in school life, and the annual calendar includes an ambitious programme of concerts, musicals, tours, and recitals. Students frequently perform in collaboration with local orchestras, community groups, and national ensembles. The department also embraces modern music-making, offering opportunities in music production, composition, and technology.

Staff benefit from a supportive leadership team, extensive CPD opportunities, and a strong culture of professional collaboration. Teachers are encouraged to innovate in the classroom while enjoying small class sizes and the autonomy to tailor their teaching to student interests.

Experience and Qualifications

* Degree in Music or a closely related field, combined with QTS/PGCE.

* Proven experience teaching GCSE and/or A-Level Music, with strong understanding of current specifications.

* A strong performance, conducting, or composition background, with the ability to lead ensembles confidently.

* Excellent classroom management and communication skills.

* Ability to inspire students across a wide range of musical abilities and genres.

* Commitment to inclusive, creative, and high-quality teaching.
