Overview

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal


Professional duties and authorities

Noting the regulations under (Northern Ireland) 1987, Schedule 3 and Regulation 5, the following outlines general and particular duties applicable to teachers (non-principal) and other teaching roles within the board/authorities context.

1. 1) Exercise of general professional duties A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require: (a) if employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal of that school; (b) if employed by a board on terms under which the teacher is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school in which he/she may for the time being be required to work as a teacher.
2. 2) Exercise of particular duties (a) A teacher employed as a teacher (other than a principal) in a school shall perform, in accordance with any directions reasonably given by the principal, such particular duties as may reasonably be assigned; (b) A teacher referred to in paragraph 1(b) shall perform, in accordance with any direction reasonably given from time to time by the board or by the principal of any school in which he/she may be required to work, such particular duties as may reasonably be assigned.


Responsibilities

1. 1. Planning 1.1 Planning and preparing courses and lessons; 1.2 Teaching, according to pupils’ educational needs, including setting and marking work; 1.3 Assessing, recording and reporting on pupil development, progress and attainment.
2. 2. General 2.1 Promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils and classes; 2.2 Providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters including future education and careers; 2.3 Maintaining records on pupils’ personal and social needs where appropriate; 2.4 Communicating with parents; 2.5 Communicating and cooperating with external bodies as approved; 2.6 Participating in relevant meetings.
3. 3. Assessment/Reporting Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to pupils, except where this might compromise a teacher’s position.
4. 4. Staff Development/Professional Development 4.1 Participating in staff development and performance reviews; 4.2 Reviewing teaching methods and programmes; 4.3 Advising and cooperating with the Principal and other teachers on curriculum, teaching materials, assessment and pastoral arrangements.
5. 5. Discipline/Health and Safety 5.1 Maintaining good order and discipline and safeguarding health and safety; 5.2 Participating in school meetings related to curriculum or administration.
6. 6. Public Examinations Participating in preparations for public examinations, assessing pupils for examinations, recording and reporting assessments, and supervising during examinations.
7. 7. Review and Development of Management Activities/Administration 7.1 Contributing to selection and development of other teachers, coordinating or managing their work, and participating in curriculum, organisation and pastoral development; 7.2 Administrative tasks including supervision of support staff and equipment, assemblies, attendance registers and pupil supervision where appropriate.
8. 8. Number of days/Hours of work Illustrative guidelines on annual days, hours, breaks and related conditions; details governed by contract and authority policy.
9. 9. Staff cover Arrangements for covering absent teachers, with conditions based on school enrolment figures and policy; this description provides guideline rather than rigid requirements.

Section 1 - Essential Criteria

The following are essential criteria; these will be measured at shortlisting and may be further explored during interview. Please show clearly on your application how you meet these criteria.

Qualifications/Professional Membership

Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.

Experience

Minimum of 1 year’s demonstrable paid experience of teaching P6 or P7 at Key Stage 2 to achieve positive learning outcomes; demonstrable experience using a range of classroom strategies to support and challenge pupils of all abilities, including those with Special Educational Needs; demonstrable experience using digital media/technology to enhance teaching and learning; demonstrable experience monitoring pupil progress, performance, targets and interventions.

Other

Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.


Section 2 - Essential Criteria (interview stage)

Knowledge: Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum; safeguarding and child protection policy; SEND Code of Practice; range of teaching strategies; IT systems and digital tools; current assessment methods.

Skills/Abilities: Effective teaching and classroom management; inclusive learning environment; initiative, problem-solving, flexibility; collaboration with pupils, parents and community; teamwork and motivation.

Values Orientation: Alignment with the school’s ethos and values.


Section 3 - Desirable Criteria

Desirable criteria may be used to narrow the candidate pool and include experience (e.g., assisting with music delivery) and relevant qualifications.


Disclosure of Criminal Background

Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background may be required for roles involving regulated activity; applicants will meet the cost at pre-employment stage. Further information is available from NI Direct or the Department of Justice.
