Overview
We are seeking an experienced Operations Director to provide strategic and operational leadership for the Geo-Environmental business (GEM) at Tetra Tech Europe. This senior role may be combined with the Sector Lead for Tetra Tech Europe, depending on preference and experience, and involves shaping and growing a core sector across Europe.
About Us
Our Geo-Environmental Team comprises about 100 specialists located across 10 offices in the UK & Ireland, working in Ground Investigation, Land Quality and Groundwater & Geothermal. Core sectors include Energy, Water, Defence, Nuclear and Property. Over the past 4 years we have grown turnover from about £12M to £17M annually, with ambitions to reach £25M within 4–5 years as part of a clear growth strategy aligned with the UK TT Business Blueprint.
About The Role
We are seeking an Operations Director to provide strategic and operational leadership to GEM, ensuring delivery of operational, strategic and financial objectives. The role may also include Sector Lead duties, enabling cross-European collaboration with Business and Operating Units. The Sector Lead would drive sector strategy and report to the TT Sector Board.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Business Planning
* Support the BU Managing Director in delivering annual and medium-term plans, KPIs and growth objectives.
* Act as a core member of the Geo-Environmental Operational Leadership Team, contributing to overall business success.
* Lead on business planning activities (budgeting, sector strategies, business development priorities).
* Provide senior support to Heads of Discipline, enabling them to implement operational strategies aligned to our ambitious growth plans.
* Contribute fresh thinking and challenge existing processes, embedding a culture of continuous improvement.
* Champion the adoption of best practices, digital transformation, and sustainability initiatives.
Operational Delivery & Excellence
* Oversee and direct project delivery, commercial management, and resourcing across Geo-Environmental.
* Ensure accurate forecasting of pipeline and delivery against agreed plans and KPIs.
* Lead our Geo-Environmental proposal and bid process (Go/No Go, Bid Production Procedure) to improve efficiency and opportunity conversion.
* Maintain robust contractor and supplier networks to support timely, cost-effective, and high-quality project outcomes.
* Proactively manage business risks, ensuring timely action and escalation when required.
* Identify and help develop Strategic Partnerships.
* Promote and uphold a positive safety and security culture.
Business Development & Growth
* Lead and support business development initiatives across GEM Focus Groups (Water, Energy, Technology, Emerging Contaminants etc.).
* Develop and implement marketing and BD strategies to drive sales growth, bid conversion, and sector positioning.
* Work with our technical and marketing teams to develop marketing material that helps promote our services in full.
* Identify and support Award submissions that showcase our capability and enable us to promote our business.
* Support strategic hires that strengthen sectors, regions, and client relationships, thus helping us accelerate growth in target markets.
* Establish and enhance relationships along with identifying and developing strategic partnerships with key clients, partners, supply chain and stakeholders.
* Lead or support engagement activities to help us achieve our business growth targets.
People Leadership & Team Development
* Develop and implement a succession plan for the operational team, ensuring diversity and inclusion are embedded.
* Create senior capacity by mentoring and empowering leadership within the GEM Heads of Discipline.
* Act as the link between senior leadership and the wider GEM team, ensuring communication, alignment, and collaboration.
* Act as a role model for Tetra Tech’s core values and behaviours.
Technical Expertise & Thought Leadership
* Provide expert advice in specialist geo-environmental areas (e.g. ground investigations, land quality, groundwater & geothermal, environmental due diligence).
* Positively influence technical and operational best practices across the business.
* Ensure the business maintains the capability and infrastructure to deliver on current and future client requirements.
About You
You will bring a blend of technical expertise, commercial acumen, and proven leadership experience to this senior role:
* Professional Background: A relevant degree in geology, environmental science, or related discipline, with extensive senior management or director-level experience. Chartered status (CEng, CGeol, or equivalent) is highly desirable.
* Strategic & Commercial Leadership: Track record in developing and implementing business strategies, delivering growth, and securing major projects from inception through to completion. Strong commercial awareness, with the ability to prepare competitive bids, write compelling proposals, and perform with confidence at client interviews.
* Industry Knowledge: Strong understanding of the geoscience and geo-environmental sectors, with insight into emerging markets, regulatory developments, and client needs across infrastructure and the built environment.
* Operational & Governance Expertise: Governance, operating procedures, financial management, and risk management to ensure projects are delivered on time, cost, and quality requirements.
* Technical Excellence: Demonstrable track record of high-quality technical delivery within consultancy services, maintaining credibility with clients and peers alike.
* People & Collaboration: An inclusive leader who has successfully managed and developed professional teams, coaching and mentoring others, and collaborating across business units and stakeholders at all levels.
