Open Door is a community and arts space on Berkhamsted Hight Street accessible to all, with a donations only café at it's heart. We offer a wide range of activities, from workshops and exhibitions, community food and gardening projects, to volunteering opportunities.
Helping tackle social inequality and isolation is at the heart of what we do. Our funding comes from a mix of grants, donations and revenue generation from our activities.

The General Manager role
The General Manager of Open Door has overall responsibility for the strategy and delivery of the services that Open Door provides into the Berkhamsted community. The General Manager is accountable in respect of these responsibilities to the Trustees of The Way Inn Trust who are responsible for Open Door. We have ambitious plans to grow and develop Open Door as a key hub in our community, and we will look to the GM to lead us by providing direction, guidance and support for the team.
Key Responsibilities
The General Manager is the senior leader at Open Door and the role carries with it a broad range of strategic and operational responsibilities:
* Working with key stakeholders to implement the strategy and associated Business Plan for Open Door to enable it to fulfil its strategic vision and values at this most challenging of times;
* Lead implementation of the Business Plan, focusing on areas such as partnerships, programme design, marketing, fundraising etc. with the support of the team;
* Determine the optimum organisational structure for Open Door to ensure that it is a financially viable and sustainable organisation; along with the trustees
* Take on overall accountability for the financial and commercial management of Open Door, ensuring that it can operate as a sustainable organisation. This requires a strong focus on cost control and income generation.
* Take overall responsibility for all aspects of Health & Safety to ensure a safe working environment for customers, staff and volunteers
* Leading, motivating and guiding the team and volunteers to deliver the full range of services into the community. You will hold line management responsibility for the team;
* Raise the profile of Open Door locally and even more widely, representing us within the community and working with other caring, charitable or partnership groups to build services and solutions that meet the needs identified within the community.
* Provide cover for the Assistant Manager for holidays and unexpected leave.
Key Relationships
The role reports to the Trustees of The Way Inn Trust who are responsible for Open Door. Key external relationships will be with the full range of caring and charitable organisations in the community, potential service/solution providers and with community members with specific needs. Key internal relationships will be with the small team (a mix of paid and voluntary roles), which you will lead.

We are looking for a creative, passionate and caring General Manager with the commitment and time to grow and develop Open Door. We think this role needs:
* A passion for caring for people and strong communication skills with individuals right across our community.
* Excellent organisational skills and experience and ability to manage resources efficiently and effectively.
* Ideally, with direct experience of leading the strategic growth and development of another charitable organisation;
* With several years direct and relevant leadership and line management experience and an ability to motivate and inspire others. A strong team-worker who can grow and develop the Open Door team members to implement the strategy of Open Door;
* A commercial mind-set that will enable Open Door to provide and finance the services that it wants to deliver in a sustainable and cost-effective manner. You will be good at financial management;
* Ideally, with a background in the charity, arts or creative industries, bringing associated networks, to lead Open Door's art/exhibition focus; and,
* A can-do approach and willingness to muck in, enabling us to translate the strategy into reality;
* Minimum 2 years catering experience preferably with Level 3 Food Safety
* Sound Health & Safety knowledge including risk assesments, fire safety and first aid.
Working Hours
This is a paid role requiring a commitment of 37.5 hours per week with flexibility for evening and weekend work as required. You may be required to work in different local locations as deemed necessary.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: £24,500.00-£26,000.00 per year
