We’re hiring: Functional Skills Tutor - Maths & English

Southend City Community College is looking for additional experienced Functional Skills Tutors to join our team to support the delivery of our Functional Skills provision.

This is an exciting time to join Southend City Community College, formerly Southend Adult Community College. We are a growing college with an exciting future, supporting the city of Southend, Rochford and Castle Point.

As a tutor here, you can expect small class sizes, an effective learning support programme and a staff mentoring and wellbeing scheme.

You will be part of a unique strategy to empower our young learners with the Maths and English skills they require for work and life.

We deliver English and Maths Functional Skills courses at E1-E3, Level 1 and Level 2 and are seeking experienced tutors who can teach both English and Maths.


Job Title:

Functional Skills Tutor – Maths & English


Reports to:

Head of English & Maths / Vice Principal Curriculum & Quality


Responsible for:

Functional Skills English and Maths


Hours:

30 hours x 52 – 0.8 FTE


Teaching hours:

Expectation of classroom teaching of 18 hours per week


Locations:

Both Southchurch and Leigh-on-Sea campuses


Closing date:

Friday 19th June 2026


Interviews:

6th, 8th or 9th July 2026

The successful candidate(s) will join our team and deliver engaging and effective Functional Skills courses to our study programme and adult learners.

As an established Functional Skills provider consistently achieving pass rates above the national average, we are now seeking to expand our provision and continue to build on our successful Functional Skills programme with the implementation of a unique strategy.


Main purpose of the job:

* To be subject lead for a level across the provision
* To assess, plan and deliver functional skills in numeracy and literacy, to students on an individual or small group basis according to their individual learning needs and requirements
* To work as a part of the functional skills team to develop a high-quality functional skills programme within the college
* To be a part of the ongoing assessment of students’ learning needs and to make reasonable adjustments as required, minimising barriers to learning and achievement


Key responsibilities include:

* Develop comprehensive schemes of work, lesson plans, instructional materials, and assessments for Functional Skills courses
* Develop and follow a scheme of learning to fit the number of teaching hours
* Make use of Initial Assessments where required and plan to learn accordingly
* Develop customised lesson plans and materials based on individual student needs
* Use preferred teaching resources and CPD opportunities fully and effectively to enhance learner experience and employability skills
* Deliver 3‑hour Entry, Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills courses that are dynamic, interactive and engaging, catering to a diverse group of 16‑19 and adult learners, fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment
* Deliver in a variety of locations including the College campuses
* Work with individuals and groups to agree and keep up to date Individual Learning Plans as appropriate to their needs, supporting them to achieve these goals through regular reviews
* Utilise a range of teaching techniques and tools to accommodate different learning styles and abilities in a classroom setting
* Provide clear explanations of concepts, ensuring students grasp fundamental principles and can apply them practically
* Offer personalised support and guidance to learners who require additional assistance, using communication methods to facilitate their learning journey effectively
* Conduct formative assessments to monitor learner progress and use the information from these assessment checks to inform teaching
* Evaluate student performance through online assignments and quizzes and provide timely and detailed feedback
* Provide homework opportunities and exam preparation strategies
* Foster a positive and encouraging learning environment
* Communicate regularly with colleagues, parents or guardians regarding student progress
* Stay current with the GCSE/FS curriculum and exam requirements
* Monitor attendance, punctuality and progress of learners
* Maintain accurate records of student participation, progress and performance, and submit necessary reports to line managers
* Contribute to the regular formal review process for each learner
* Collaborate with colleagues to share best practice, contribute to curriculum development, and enhance the overall quality, achievement and success of the courses
* Keep up to date with developments in the field of Functional Skills and education, integrating relevant updates into the course content
* Attend periodic standardisation, review and curriculum development meetings with the Functional Skills team
* Re Functional Skills, liaise with college Head of Quality to ensure assessment is appropriate and that work satisfies awarding body criteria
* Re Functional Skills, comply with external verification requirements of the college awarding body and provide, if requested, access to samples of work for scrutiny when requested
* Re Functional Skills, participate in internal verification for Functional Skills Mathematics and English, Speaking, Listening & Communication at Level 1/Level 2 qualifications, as necessary
* Attend college training events, i.e. College standardisation meetings and staff conferences, as required
* Attend and participate in meetings and other events as required
* Comply with college cycle of observations of teaching, learning and assessment
* Play an active part in your own professional development and undertake continual professional development
* Ensure adherence to established teaching policies, procedures, and quality standards
* Work in accordance with SCC equality and diversity and safeguarding policies
* Undertake any other reasonable duties relating to the broad scope of the position, commensurate with the post, and in support of the college
* Qualifications or membership to a registered body: have a teaching qualification such as Cert Ed, PGCE, DTLLS
* Ideally have at least a Level 5 subject specialism in English and/or Maths, or have a willingness to undertake further subject specific accreditation
* Possess the ability to teach functional skills English and maths, ideally from Pre‑entry to Level 2
* Ability to be flexible, with a can‑do attitude and work independently
* Ability to prioritise workload and work accurately with attention to detail
* Ability to work well under pressure
* Ability to seek out and understand the expectations and needs of customers/clients
* Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
* Ability to work as part of a team
* Ability to always maintain confidentiality and act with discretion
* Knowledge and practice of assessing functional skills and supporting people with specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, and skill in working with learners with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)
* Experience of working in an education setting, preferably post‑16, and possess a high degree of personal resilience and emotional intelligence
* Good or better Teaching, Learning and Assessment grades
* Patience, adaptability, and a passion for teaching
* Ability to create engaging and interactive learning experiences
* Experience of working with young people
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
* Strong organisational and time‑management skills
* Familiarity with various educational resources and materials
* Confident in using technology to support teaching and assessment, or willingness to learn

Functional Skills sits within the Study Programme Team which currently has 11 full‑time staff and a dedicated Functional Skills provision. Currently, there are 8 tutors who deliver Functional Skills Maths and English courses.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS check. Occasional evening work may be required for school events or parent meetings. Ongoing training and professional development opportunities will be provided.
