Overview
The Specialist Palliative Care Team at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an additional Specialist Palliative Care Consultant with a specific focus on inpatient work. The role is based across Luton, Dunstable and Bedford Hospitals and involves providing consultant advice to specialist nurses, specialty doctors, GPs, consultant colleagues in other specialties and other healthcare professionals within the hospital.
Key Duties
* Provide, with Consultant colleagues, a service to Luton and Dunstable Hospital and advise on Palliative Care within the hospital.
* Work with the palliative care team and the wider team on Trust‑wide development of palliative pathways.
* Support Community Teams and the wider system through regular board rounds and a virtual ward.
* Take part in research and education and explore new ways to teach End of Life Care.
* Cover for colleagues’ annual leave and other authorised absences.
* Undertake any responsibility that relates to a special interest.
* Participate in medical audit, Trusts Clinical Governance processes and in CPD.
* Be willing to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels.
* Carry out duties with due regard to the Trust’s Equal Opportunities Policy.
* Maintain a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors and staff.
* Ensure duties are carried out to the highest standard, in accordance with current quality initiatives.
* Handle data responsibly, respecting confidentiality and complying with the Data Protection Act 1998 and related policies.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Medical Degree
* MRCP
Desirable Qualifications
* MD or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research
Registration
* Full GMC Registration (GMC Licence to Practice mandatory before employment)
* Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview, or on the Specialist Register at time of applying
Clinical Experience
* Excellent all‑round experience of DGH work
* Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Palliative Care
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical work and deliver service without direct supervision
Clinical Effectiveness
* Understanding of clinical governance and demonstrated ongoing CPD
* Experience of guideline appraisal
* Participation in local audits
* Ability to interpret and apply clinical research
Desirable Clinical Effectiveness
* Participation in national audits
Teaching
* Knowledge and ability to teach all grades of trainees and medical students (essential)
* Attended Teaching the Teachers or similar course (desirable)
Personal Skills
* Ability to co‑operate in a democratic team environment
* Flexible attitude, team player with good management skills
* Leadership skills
Clinical Governance
* Able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the principles and elements of clinical governance
Personal Circumstances
* Residence within 10 miles by road or up to thirty minutes travelling time of the hospital for on‑call emergencies
* Fit to undertake the role with satisfactory Occupational Health clearance
* Satisfactory DBS clearance
