Job summary

HEALTH CARE ASSISTANTS (HCAs) – FULL-TIME AND PART-TIME HOURS – 7 DAY ROTA
Closing date: 29 January 2026
Location: Erdington Hospice with occasional multi-site working
Hours: 37.5 full-time; Part-time hours available – minimum 22.5 hours per week; working flexibly over a 7-day rota
Salary: Clinical Band 2 £23,875 per year full-time (pro rata for part-time)
DBS Requirement: Enhanced check with Adult Barring List

At Birmingham Hospice, we are dedicated to improving the quality of life for people living with life-limiting conditions and supporting their families during one of the most challenging times they will face.

We are seeking caring, compassionate, and committed Health Care Assistants (HCAs) to join our In-Patient Unit team at Erdington Hospice.

As an HCA, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team delivering hands-on, high-quality palliative and end-of-life care. You’ll ensure a safe environment for patients and families while being sensitive to their spiritual, psychological, and social needs.


Main duties of the job

* Deliver hands-on personal care to patients including care of the deceased patient
* Report verbally (patient information) to appropriate team members
* Document care given on system one
* Contribute to multidisciplinary discussions and work as part of a multidisciplinary team
* Attend statutory training sessions
* Work flexibly across all areas in the Hospice if required
* Escort patients to appointments
* Be sensitive to the spiritual, psychological and social needs of patients and their families
* Convey messages and information to team members, patients and their families as appropriate
* Initiate and participate in social activities for patients with colleagues
* Undertake clinical skills as competent while adhering to hospice policies and procedures
* Be aware of and undertake infection control measures to ensure a safe working environment
* Undertake mandatory training and yearly appraisals in line with Hospice policy
* To ensure resources are used efficiently and cost-effectively for the good of patients
* Maintain effective communication with patients, relatives and the wider multidisciplinary team
* Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and high standards of written and verbal communication
* Participate in creating and maintaining a safe working environment in accordance with health and safety legislation
* Uphold confidentiality and patient information governance in line with General Data Protection Regulations


What you’ll need

* Level 2 NVQ in Health or Social Care (or willingness to work towards)
* Previous experience in a care role within healthcare, care or similar setting
* Competent in English and Maths (GCSE level or equivalent)
* The ability to work flexibly across a 7-day rota, minimum 22.5 hours per week and occasional multi-site locations
* Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
* Basic IT skills (databases, email, Word)
