Band 4 Assistant Psychologist – Acute Inpatient Mental Health
We are seeking a motivated and compassionate Assistant Psychologist to join our multidisciplinary teams within acute inpatient mental health wards. This role offers an opportunity to support the delivery of psychologically informed care for individuals experiencing acute mental health difficulties.
This is a fast‑paced and emotionally demanding environment, requiring the ability to work calmly, reflectively, and professionally with people experiencing high levels of distress. The role involves working under the supervision of qualified Clinical or Counselling Psychologists, supporting psychological assessment, formulation, and intervention planning, and assisting with evidence‑based individual and group interventions. This role involves exposure to acute mental health presentations and can be emotionally demanding. The post holder will be expected to develop and use basic self‑care and reflective skills, make appropriate use of supervision and team support, and work within their level of competence while maintaining focus on service user care.
As a Band 4 Assistant Psychologist, you will be supported through regular supervision and are expected to be open to reflection, learning, and feedback, particularly when working in challenging or emotionally complex situations.
Responsibilities
* Support the delivery of psychological assessments and contribute to formulation discussion
* Assist in planning and facilitating structured therapeutic groups and 1:1 low intensity interventions under supervision
* Collect, score, and interpret psychological outcome measures and service-user feedback
* Contribute to clinical risk assessments and ward‑based reviews where appropriate
* Participate in audit, service evaluation, and research activities to support service development
* Work collaboratively with a range of professionals (nursing, psychiatry, OT, social work, etc.) as part of a multidisciplinary team
