About Barnet Council
Barnet is a borough with much to be proud of. Our excellent schools, vibrant town centres, vast green spaces and diverse communities all help make it a great place to live and work. As a council we want to build on these strengths as we move into the future. We are growing and developing as an organisation to meet the challenges facing our borough and we are committed to working with partner organisations and residents to make Barnet even better. As an organisation, our staff are committed to Our Values: Learning to Improve, Caring, Inclusive, Collaborative - which drive everything we do.

Lead the future of Barnet's buildings and create safer, greener, high-performing spaces for our community. We're seeking an experienced leader to oversee capital projects, building compliance, maintenance, and energy management across a diverse property portfolio. If you have the technical expertise, strategic vision, and leadership skills to deliver excellence while helping us achieve net zero, we'd love to hear from you.
About the role
As Head of Building Services, you'll lead the delivery and management of our capital and planned investment programmes, ensuring the effective maintenance, compliance, and improvement of the council's building assets. You'll oversee a multi-disciplinary team covering repairs, maintenance, energy management, mechanical and electrical engineering works, and the Schools Modernisation Programme. This strategic role involves developing policies, ensuring compliance with legislation and best practice, managing procurement, budgets, and contracts, and delivering value for money. You'll also engage stakeholders across the borough and play a key role in achieving our net zero carbon ambitions.

Essential Criteria
To be successful, you will need:
- A degree in building surveying, building services, or an industry-recognised equivalent qualification, or equivalent professional experience.
- Demonstrable experience leading multi-disciplinary teams within building services, property management, or related fields.
- Comprehensive knowledge of building regulations, British standards, and health and safety compliance.
- Proven ability to manage budgets, develop business cases, and oversee procurement and contract management.
- Strong stakeholder engagement, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Knowledge of building services, utilities, renewable energy technologies, and building maintenance/compliance.

About you

We're looking for an inspiring leader who combines technical expertise with a strategic mindset. You'll be someone who can see the bigger picture, make confident decisions, and guide a skilled team to deliver outstanding results. You'll thrive in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment, balancing compliance, innovation, and value for money. A collaborative approach, strong communication skills, and a commitment to continuous improvement will be at the heart of how you work.
