Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Haematologist with an interest in Lymphoma based at the Royal Sussex Country Hospital in Brighton. The appointee will join a well-established and cohesive team in the department of Haematology part of the Cancer Division at University Hospitals Sussex.

This is an exciting opportunity to become involved in developing a clinically led, integrated Haematology Service wtihin the wider trust along the South Coast and we are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and forward looking colleage to work within our team.

The successful candidate will participate in the established Multi-Disciplinary Team for Haematological malignancy in collaboration with the Medical Oncology, Clinical Oncology/Radiotherapy and Haematology Consultants which is combined with Worthing and St Richards Hospital.

At the Royal Sussex County Hospital we have a dedicated Haematology ward with delivery of inpatient care to level 3 BCSH guidelines (2009). Laboratory Support and Transfusion services are provided for a wide range of clinical specialties which includes regional Renal Medicine and Cardio-Thoracic Surgery at Brighton. Brighton is also designated as a Haemophilia Centre.

The appointee will participate in the clinical and laboratory Haematology Service and the post will also include the opportunity to participate in teaching at the Medical School. The appointee will have an On-Call Committment on a 1 in 6 our of hours on call rota.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will join a team of 12 Haematologists who work across Sussex (Brighton, Haywards Heath, Worthing and Chichester) in delivering a comprehensive Haematology service for patients from across the County.

To fulfil the role of a Consultant Haematologist in providing full clinical care to those with blood disorders and inpatient care to those with haematological malignancy.

To support colleagues with specialist advice on all aspects of Haematology both within the trust and in primary care.

To provide clinical support to the Haematology Laboratory.

To actively engage in departmental meetings, clinical governance and teaching to the junior medical team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The main duties of the post include the following

Provision of outpatient clinics at both RSCH and PRH. To include Lymphoma clinics general
Participation in the weekly haematology MDT.
Provide cover and advice to the haematology day case unit, to include medical review if needed.
Provide ward cover for inpatient lymphoma and support of the suspected lymphoma pathway
Laboratory cover to be negotiated

On Call Commitment: Rota is a 1:6, which incorporates attending the ward for seven consecutive days. This incorporates two scheduled ward rounds during the week, and daily ward rounds on Saturday and Sundays. Includes 24 hour telephone advice as needed.

In a 10 PA job plan 1 SPA - CPD will be provided (for less than full time this may be pro rata to minimum 0.5 SPA-CPD). SPA - CPD (168 hours per year) includes job planning, appraisal, mandatory training, consultant meetings, clinical governance such as NICE guideline reviews, national audits, GIRFT and patient safety such as incident investigation, coroner participation, learning from deaths, ward teaching and supporting management roles.

Essential criteria

1. •Basic medical degree
2. •MB BS, FRCR or appropriate specialist qualification
3. Full and specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the GMC or be eligible for registration within six months of the interview. • If you trained in the UK, you must also have a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Haematology/Radiology or be within six months of receiving it by the interview date. • If you trained outside the UK, you must provide evidence that your qualifications are equivalent to the UK CCT. (Equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
