Job Overview

The Nursing Assistant role supports the coordination of Section 136/135 admissions within the Children and Young Persons Place of Safety Suite (CYP POS) and accompanies detained persons while awaiting assessment outcomes. When not required in the CYP POS suite, the post holder will work in Plym Bridge within the patient unit, often as part of a team nursing complex children and young people with increased levels of observation.

Tasks will be assigned by a trained nurse after sufficient instruction. The trained nurse retains decision‑making responsibility and overall direction. The Nursing Assistant will assist in delivering physical, social and psychological care to patients with mental health problems or illness.

This role may not be eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route; please refer to the UK Gov website for eligibility details.

All Livewell staff are expected to be willing to work across a 7‑day service.

Job Responsibilities

* Work closely with the nurse in charge in the CYP POS suite to facilitate activities and support detained persons.
* When CYP POS is not required, work as part of a team within the patient unit in Plym Bridge.
* Carry out tasks assigned by the trained nurse, ensuring competence and taking only those tasks for which instruction has been provided.
* Maintain confidentiality in respect of the patient/client at all times.
* Know and apply the Health and Safety at Work Act, and report accidents and untoward incidents promptly.
* Obtain knowledge of Livewell policies, procedures and practices and carry out duties in accordance with them.
* Support community activities either on a 1:1 basis or in small groups, and co‑facilitate groups with qualified staff.
* Participate in the Plym Bridge response team and undertake associated training.
* Assist the registered nurse to carry out tasks that fulfil the patient/client’s physical and psychological needs as identified in the Care Plan / Assessment.
* Escort patients to other departments or designated areas, including community settings.
* Contribute to assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care, including participation in case review and admission/discharge processes.
* Record observations in the multidisciplinary patient electronic file, counter‑signed by a registered nurse.
* Assist with personal care and record patient observations in accordance with the Care Plan.
* Record and manage patient property.
* Undertake specific responsibilities designated by the Unit Manager.
* Participate in mandatory and other training as directed by the organisation and contribute to any audit process.
* Behave in a manner that does not bring the organisation into disrepute.


Qualifications

Essential

* Vocational Qualification III in Healthcare, or demonstrable ability, skills and knowledge to work at this level.
* Effective communication skills.
* Team working skills.
* Ability to participate in activities with patients.

Desirable

* Ability to work with minimal supervision.
* Time management skills.
* Computer skills.


Essential Knowledge and Skills

* Awareness of personal safety.
* Basic physical observations.
* Confidentiality.
* De‑escalation skills.
* Understanding of the role of the Place of Safety worker.
* Ability to engage patients in activities off the unit.
* Record‑keeping skills.
* Requirement to restrain and participate in physical intervention training and teamwork.
* Motivated, empathetic, reliable, confident in dealing with patients, able to work in stressful conditions and as part of a team.

Desirable

* Willingness to undertake training related to required skills.
* Knowledge of solution‑focused approach.
* Knowledge of CPA.


Experience

Essential

* Relevant experience of working in a mental health setting, or ability to demonstrate relevant experience.

Desirable

* Children and Young Peoples Mental Health experience.
* Working within a multi‑disciplinary team.
