Responsibilities
* Communication skills: communicate sensitive and complex information to patients and their relatives; provide specialist advice to a range of health care professionals; provide expert clinical advice and support to the multidisciplinary team; liaise with nursing staff and the multidisciplinary team to achieve optimum levels of care.
* Clinical governance and care planning: compile comprehensive medical and nursing records in accordance with Trust guidelines and NMC standards; ensure regular review of patients with reassessment of treatment plans and initiate changes as needed; liaise with colleagues across the trust for smooth transfers within hospital sites; act as a role model to ward team; protect patient rights, dignity and confidentiality at all times.
* Analytical and decision-making: analyse complex information and situations, make judgments, assess patient needs within protocols and policy; initiate investigations and treatment where appropriate; refer patients for medical assessment when specific skills are needed; respond promptly to calls regarding patients from ward areas, including out of normal hours; prioritise clinical need and organise workload.
* Clinical operations and patient care delivery: organise own day-to-day work, balance clinical and non-clinical demands, respond to unexpected events, prioritise calls from ward-based nursing staff; ensure delivery of evidence-based medical and nursing care; apply highly developed physical skills (e.g., IV administration, venepuncture, IV cannulation); translate theory into practical care delivery.
* Prescribing and diagnostic capabilities: prescribing and administering medications and fluids; physical assessment and diagnosis; recording and interpretation of a 12-lead ECG; male catheterisation; defibrillation; advanced airway skills; access to blood results and x-rays via PACS system.
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse with degree-level study; completion of Physical Assessment Skills course; current practice in nursing; Independent nurse prescriber; Advanced Life Support certification.
