MANUAL
Director of communications
€100,000 a year
Posted: 17 November
Offer description

Our mission is to redefine healthcare — combining science, technology, and behavioural change to deliver better outcomes for patients and the health system.

The Director of Communications will shape how Manual is seen and understood by the world — building both brand visibility and institutional trust. The role spans consumer and corporate communications, ensuring that every story, campaign, and announcement strengthens Manual’s reputation as a credible, responsible, and forward‑thinking leader in digital health.

This hybrid role is based three days per week in our London HQ.

What you’ll do

Consumer Communications

* Define and execute an earned media strategy that builds Manual’s cultural relevance, brand fame, and public trust.
* Lead proactive, fame‑building campaigns to amplify the Manual brand strategy, and build on the brand marketing calendar.
* Work hand‑in‑hand with the wider Brand and Marketing team to ensure creative campaigns translate into earned stories and media coverage.
* Identify opportunities to put Manual at the centre of cultural and industry conversations — from product launches to thought leadership.
* Manage press activity end‑to‑end: briefings, press releases, interviews, media events, and reactive commentary.
* Act as an editorial guardian for Manual, ensuring every story lands with impact, accuracy, and brand consistency.

Corporate Communications

* Shape the corporate narrative, turning Manual’s progress, data, and leadership vision into compelling stories that build authority.
* Partner with senior leaders to prepare speeches, op‑eds, and interviews that reinforce trust and credibility.
* Manage sensitive and high‑stakes moments with discretion and control, balancing brand ambition with regulatory compliance.
* Manage crisis communications and reputation response plans.
* Track and report on coverage, sentiment, and share of voice to continually refine messaging and media impact.

External Affairs and Health Policy

* Set the high‑level direction for how Manual shows up across NHS, government, regulatory, and industry conversations.
* Oversee an external affairs partner or agency who manages day‑to‑day stakeholder engagement and policy activity.
* Work with Medical, Legal, and Research teams to ensure our clinical evidence and positions are communicated clearly and responsibly.
* Stay across major policy and regulatory developments to guide messaging and flag risks or opportunities.
* Ensure all partner‑led activity aligns with Manual’s standards and supports our reputation as a responsible health brand.

Who you are

* 10+ years’ experience in communications and PR, ideally across consumer health, technology, or highly regulated industries.
* A natural storyteller with strong editorial instincts and a proven ability to earn attention through media, culture, and leadership.
* Experienced in both brand‑building and reputation management, able to shift gears between creative campaigns and corporate issues.
* Deep media relationships across consumer, lifestyle, business, and health press.
* A builder. Comfortable getting hands‑on, setting up systems, building teams, and rhythms from scratch to establish a best‑in‑class comms function.
* Proactive and reactive in equal measure — able to spot opportunities ahead of the curve while managing fast‑moving issues with calm and control.
* Calm under pressure, with experience managing high‑visibility media moments and crisis situations.
* Strategic yet hands‑on. Comfortable writing, pitching, and shaping coverage directly.
* Collaborative and commercially minded, able to partner effectively across Brand, Legal, Medical, and Leadership.
* Culturally fluent, plugged into news cycles and trends that shape how the public thinks about health and technology.

Desirable

* Proven ability to engage policymakers and health system leaders, ideally including NHS, DHSC, and NICE.
* Established networks in health policy, NHS leadership, or UK health journalism.
* Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks affecting health communications (ASA, MHRA).
