Job Overview
Support the Urgent Care Service as a Junior/ Senior Nurse Practitioner within UTCs at Blaydon and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, participating in structured career development programmes that allow progression from Band 6 to Band 7.
Main duties of the job
As a Junior Practitioner:
* Review and treat patients presenting with minor injury and minor illness.
* Support colleagues with clinical and professional development and mentorship.
On progression to Senior Practitioner:
* Act as Shift Lead at both QEH and Blaydon UTCs.
* Serve as key point‑of‑contact on shift and manage front‑desk streaming at QEH.
Detailed responsibilities
* Undertake assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for patients with urgent but non‑life‑threatening conditions.
* Manage undifferentiated, undiagnosed presentations across all age groups.
* Perform clinical examinations and minor injury/ illness procedures.
* Wound care, suturing/gluing, fracture management and medication administration.
* Maintain independent prescribing status where applicable.
* Support streaming and triage functions to route patients safely and efficiently.
* Maintain accurate, timely clinical records in line with NMC/HCPC and local standards.
* Adhere to professional codes, safeguarding frameworks and infection prevention standards.
* Participate in clinical audit, service evaluation and quality improvement initiatives.
* Engage in reflective practice and continuous professional development.
* Follow a structured competency framework with defined milestones.
* Engage in supervised practice sessions with advanced practitioners and medical staff.
* Complete mandatory training and skills portfolios in advanced history taking, clinical examination, diagnostic reasoning and minor injury/ illness management.
* Demonstrate increasing autonomy and leadership as competencies are achieved.
Person specification
Qualifications and training
* Registered Nurse
* Degree level qualification
* Evidence of post‑registration professional development
* Teaching qualification
* Advanced clinical assessment courses (paediatric and adult)
* Non‑medical prescribing (V300) or working towards it
* Master’s‑level modules relevant to urgent care
Skills & Knowledge
* Significant post‑registration clinical experience.
* Excellent communication and organisational skills.
* Minor illness/minor injury courses or equivalent skills.
* Ability to make judgements and recommendations about clinical practice.
Experience
* Recent experience in urgent care, emergency care, primary care or a similar environment.
* Experience managing undifferentiated presentations.
* Confident decision‑making in pressured environments.
* Experience dealing with patient and relative complaints.
* Experience managing staffing issues.
Disposition
* Expectation to attend all training for Band 7 progression and complete competencies within 18–24 month probationary period.
* Demonstrates leadership behaviours and reflective practice.
