Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual, with expertise in CT and or MRI scanning, to join the Cross Sectional Imaging Team.
The post is for 30 hours per week over a 7 day period. It is a requirement of this post to participate in the CT stand-by and Saturday night rota.
WWL offers cross sectional imaging across 3 sites which includes our new state of the art Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at Leigh Infirmary. Our portfolio includes 5 Siemens CT scanners and 3 Siemens MRI 1.5T and 1 Siemens MRI 3T scanner across all sites. The CT/MRI deputy superintendent Radiographer will deputise to the CT and MRI Cross Sectional Imaging Managers in the day to day running of the department.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a Radiographer with a high level of CT/MRI experience, to broaden their skills and enhance their career. Applicants for this role need to be dynamic and motivated to deliver
excellence in patient care with a drive for improving service efficiency and quality.
You must have proven experience of an extensive range of CT/MRI procedures and a demonstrable high level of CT/MRI scanning knowledge. It is desirable for candidates to have successfully completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Cross Sectional Radiography. You should have evidence of ongoing CPD activities incorporating current advances in both CT and MRI.
This vacancy is open to internal candidates only. Employees should ideally secure their manager’s agreement for a secondment arrangement ideally prior to applying, as this will be a condition of any offer made. This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term basis to provide cover for an employee on maternity leave and will end August 2027 or when the substantive post holder returns. Whilst this post is advertised on an fixed term basis there is the potential that this post may become permanent in the future.
Main duties of the job
The successful post holder will-
1. Have demonstrated the skills necessary to work as part of a small multidisciplinary Team and have the ability to take the lead within the team in the absence of Senior Colleagues.
2. Will preferably have some experience of the clinical management of a CT/MRI Service and have some evidence of taking responsibility for the successful training of a team of Radiographers within CT/MRI.
3. Provide an efficient, effective and highly skilled patient focused CT/MRI Service.
4. Deputise for the CT/MRI Superintendent Radiographer.
5. Work within the CT/MRI department, providing leadership and training to more junior staff.
6. Accept responsibility for the care of the patient during their time within the CT/MRI Department.
7. Participate in out of hours CT standby service to cover the CT night service in the event of unplanned sickness.
8. Work flexible hours to meet the demands of the service across 7 days, this will include a limited number of night sessions.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Key results from the job holder
To act as the Deputy Superintendent Radiographer for the CT/MRI Department ensuring the provision of a high quality, patient focused and professional service is delivered at all times, meeting appropriate targets.
9. To deputise for the Cross Sectional Imaging Manager and undertake specific managerial responsibilities as designated by them.
10. To co-ordinate/ supervise patient flow through the CT department, utilisation of appointments to attain relevant targets, prioritising patients dependant on clinical condition/urgency, where there is a high demand for urgent/emergency scans at short notice.
11. The post holder will be required to perform a wide range of CT/MRI scanning techniques, and give expert advice on the selection of specialist imaging protocols and procedures.
12. Is responsible for the radiation dose received by patients during their examination and the safety of other staff in C.T. where high dose examinations take place.
13. Is responsible for MR Safety of staff, patients and visitors to the MRI Department.
14. Involved in reviewing policies and protocols.
15. Required to adapt to changes of service demands such as emergency admissions and urgent patients.
16. The ability to interpret the CT/MRI images and assess image quality, diagnostic value and the need for further imaging.
17. To be able to assess patient’s needs and adapt protocols/procedures where appropriate to ensure that optimum clinical information is acquired.
18. Have excellent problem solving skills on complex specialised equipment and good crisis management.
19. Justification of CT/X-ray examinations under departmental protocols and IR(ME)R.
20. Justification of MRI scans under Local Rules and MHRA MRI safety guidelines.
21. Has some responsibility for the control and development of quality assurance programmes within the department.
22. Will assist in the first line managing of breakdowns with the CT/MRI scanner and associated equipment. This involves problem solving to try and overcome the problem and also seeking advice from and reporting faults to the manufacturer. It also involves rearranging patient’s appointments and informing other departments of breakdowns.
23. To participate in the standby rota for CT for the provision of unplanned sickness during the night, to enable service continuity by meeting relevant targets.
24. To provide training for both CT and non-CT staff as appropriate.

25. Works within a multidisciplinary team to co-ordinate/prioritise workload.
26. Organises and manages a team of staff in the absence of the CT/MRI Superintendent.
27. Is able to adapt to service demand both on a day to day and long term basis and is able to prioritise workload in response to this.

36. Training of staff in a highly specialised area to use equipment which requires precision and very little margin for error.
37. Is required to deal with complaints from patients, relatives and/or other departments and hospitals.
Responsibility for Finance
38. Support the maintaining of stock control and ordering of supplies.
39. Responsible for the safe use of all the CT and MRI scanners and related equipment each to the value of at least £750k and the supervision and safety of other users.
40. Responsible for the safe use of a variety of equipment within radiology.
41. Ensure that best value and use of resources is maintained at all times.

45. Assist with the day to day management and supervision of a team of staff and students in the presence and absence of the Superintendent Radiographer.

Responsibility for Information Resources
47. Responsible for entering information about radiology examinations into the Radiology Information System (RIS) and correcting/updating records where required.
48. Ensure accurate records are kept on the RIS System in line with Medicines Management requirements.
49. Responsibility for ensuring accurate data and images are displayed on the Picture Archive Communication Systems (PACS).
50. Ensure accurate patient information is recorded on scans.
51. Ensure accurate records are kept under the IR(ME)R guidelines on dose and pregnancy.
52. Manage the storage and retrieval of CT/MRI scans from disk or PACS.
Responsibility for Teaching
53. To play a lead role in the training of qualified members of staff in the use of the CT/MRI scanner including a comprehensive in-house training programme.
