About the Role
Balfour Beatty is recruiting a Principal Primary Design Engineer to join the Power Transmission & Distribution team in Leeds or Newcastle. The role offers flexible working and can be full time or part time.
Key Accountabilities
* Lead the design team to deliver designs that meet customer specification requirements and comply with relevant national and international standards and legislation.
* Check and approve HV plant design deliverables such as single line diagrams, layout/elevation drawings, MEWP access layouts, SC force calculations, earthing design and calculations.
* Lead design work with due regard to health and safety procedures and the company’s obligations in compliance with CDM regulations.
* Ensure all required models and drawings have an adequate level of review and approval, including supplier and subcontractor supply chains, and incorporate the best practice of BIM.
* Lead the technical direction of the engineering team, applying industry developments to engineering methodology.
General Responsibilities
* Ensure duties are carried out in accordance with the company’s quality, health and safety, environmental procedures and business process manuals.
* Deliver engineering design on programme, quality and budget, and lead safety and sustainability by design.
* Act as the authorised approver of designs and associated settings on contracts, in accordance with published design/check/approve authorisation levels.
* Identify and support the development and training needs of the design team.
Design Responsibilities
* Identify all relevant standards and customer requirements, ensuring compliance with national and international standards and legislation, and contract specification.
* Design work with due regard to health, safety and environmental procedures; produce designer risk assessments as required by CDM regulations.
* Provide AIS and GIS substation design up to 400kV.
* Check and approve substation design deliverables, including single line diagrams, layout/elevation drawings, MEWP access layouts, SC force calculations, earthing design and calculations.
* Carry out Contractor Design Approval Engineering as defined by National Grid procedures or equivalent client procedures.
* Act as Principal Designer representative per CDM 2015 regulation.
* Check and review equipment technical specifications and engage with suppliers for offer validation.
* Examine contract documentation and establish the company’s scope of work; identify differences from the tendered contract and propose solutions.
Planning Responsibilities
* Contribute to allocation of work packages, coordinate workload and agree priorities with the Primary Plant Team.
* Prepare, contribute to, check and review Design and Engineering Management Plans (DEMP).
* Ensure the team understands and works in accordance with the Group Minimum Engineering Expectations (GMEE).
* Co‑ordinate contract requirements with designers, project and engineering managers and other Balfour Beatty PT&D departments at the earliest opportunity.
* Establish design content of work packages and resources to achieve required time scales in line with the project programme.
Education & Other Qualifications
* Graduate in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
* Charted Engineer or working towards.
* Member of IET (MIET).
Experience
* Preferred but not essential: knowledge of AutoCAD or similar.
* Microsoft Office packages.
* Over 10 years of experience in a design office environment.
* Experience liaising with customers and suppliers.
* Experience in calculations demonstrating design integrity.
* Overall design and specification of electrical power systems and associated power system components.
* Senior experience as an HV substation primary plant design engineer.
* Basic understanding of plant and civil aspects preferred.
* TP141 HV substation qualification is an advantage.
* Proven experience in a responsible position and knowledge of HV substation equipment such as HV plant and transformers.
* BIM 360 experience and knowledge.
