About the role

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position to join the programme of experimental work in the Biomedical Ultrasound Group at UCL. The position will support UKRI funded research focused on applications of therapeutic ultrasound including transcranial ultrasonic neuromodulation and ultrasonic rewarming of cryopreserved biological materials.

The post offers a unique opportunity to conduct research at an international leading university and contribute to the work of the Biomedical Ultrasound Group. The group is internationally recognised as a leader in modelling and measurement of ultrasonic fields. The appointed person will work in a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Elly Martin with the other members of the research group led together with Prof. Ben Cox and Dr. Harriet Lea-Banks .

The postholder will be required to carry out experimental research as part of a team, with activities including ultrasound metrology for therapeutic ultrasound and development of hardware for medical and therapeutic ultrasound.

About you

The successful applicant will have a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Engineering or Physical Sciences, and have completed or be near the completion of a PhD in engineering, acoustics, physics, or a related subject, or hold the equivalent experience.

Good demonstrable practical skills in physics and/or engineering, knowledge of and practical skills in acoustics and/or ultrasound physics, ultrasound systems and ultrasound metrology techniques are essential. Knowledge and experience of some or all of the following is also desirable: therapeutic ultrasound, characterisation of the acoustic properties of materials, programming and signal processing in Matlab.

The work will primarily involve the characterisation of laboratory and clinical ultrasound sources, measurement of ultrasound fields, designing and building experimental setups and phantoms for validation of computational models of ultrasound propagation in complex media, development of ultrasound metrology techniques including those suitable for the measurement of high intensity or low frequency fields, characterisation of the acoustic properties of materials, measurement of secondary effects such as ultrasonic heating. The work may also include development of ultrasonic hardware and systems. The role will also involve preparing and presenting findings of research activity to colleagues, interested parties and at appropriate conferences, contributing to the drafting and submitting of papers to appropriate peer-reviewed journals, and contributing to the overall activities of the research team and department as required.

A record of research outputs including journal articles, strong communication skills, strong team working skills, willingness to contribute to activities which promote equality, diversity and inclusion, and good research culture, and professionalism when dealing with external collaborators are also essential.
