Offer description

The Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics in the University of Cambridge is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor in German Linguistics, from 1st September 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The vacancy has arisen as a result of an academic in the Faculty being appointed to a Senior Tutorship in a college for a fixed period. The German Section will provide career development and mentoring for the successful candidate and is committed to equality, diversity and inclusiveness.

Candidates will have relevant teaching experience, will have completed a PhD in a relevant field by the start date for the post, and be able to demonstrate active, collegial engagement in research, teaching and outreach in German Studies. An excellent command of German and English, spoken and written, is essential.

We seek a scholar with teaching and research expertise in German linguistics, with a specialism in historical linguistics and/or sociolinguistics. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Linguistics and/or German Studies (or will do so by the start of the contract). They will have a record of, or clear potential for, outstanding research in this field, commensurate with their career stage and with the international reputation of the German Section, and a strong trajectory. The appointee will be conducting research focused either on a period from the history of German or on the contemporary language. They will work with colleagues from across the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics and the School of Arts and Humanities, and will contribute to the successful launch of a new degree programme in Linguistics and Modern Languages (LML). They will be able to evidence collegial engagement, plus experience of or a keen interest in outreach in German Studies.

For your application to be considered please ensure that you upload the following documents to your online application:

* A covering letter
* Your Curriculum Vitae, including a full list of publications
* A sample of written work, research or scholarship directly related to the field of the post, in English or German. This can be work that is published or work in progress, and it should be a single piece of work (as opposed to two shorter pieces). The maximum length is 8,000 words, including footnotes. You may redact parts of the sample if it is a longer piece, but the selection committee will stop reading at 8,000 words.

Applicants are also requested to ask three referees to write directly to references@MMLL.cam.ac.uk by the closing date.

The closing date for applications is midnight (GMT) on Wednesday 11th March, 2026. It is expected that interviews will be conducted in person on Friday 8th May, 2026 (subject to change).

Prospective candidates are welcome to seek more information beyond the Further Particulars by contacting Dr Charlotte Lee, Director of German, at: cll38@cam.ac.uk. On questions of procedure, please contact the School HR team on MMLPersonnel@admin.cam.ac.uk.
