About The Role
TheSeniorDesign Engineer – Electricalplays a pivotal role inthe design, specification and technical assurance of electrical power, mechanicalcooling,and associated infrastructure systems to supportBoldyn’sTelco, Enterprise, Offshore, Venues, Special Events,Wi-Fi,and NHIB programmes.TheSeniorDesign Engineer – Electrical will work across M&E projects and is therefore expected todemonstrateboth electrical and mechanical competence.
Reporting to theHead of Engineering, this role providesadvancedembedded, in-house specialist engineering capability, replacing our reliance on external electrical and mechanical consultants. The role encompasses a Technical Design Authority (TDA) status and compliance with UK regulations / standards, buildability and operational resilience of all electrical and mechanical infrastructure that supports our systems.
The role covers the design and technical assurance of Main Equipment Rooms (MER), remote unit locations, rooftop /mastand street infrastructure, ensuring systems are safe, resilient, compliant with UK legislation, and aligned with mobile network operator (MNO) equipment requirements.
Working alongside and providing technical leadership to Design Engineers, and in close collaboration with Delivery Managers, the Senior Design Engineer – Electrical leads aright first timedesign ethos, sets technical standards, and mitigates delivery and compliance risk across power and cooling designs throughoutBoldyn’sportfolio. The role also providessubject matterexpertise, design governance, and mentoring support to develop capability within the wider design team.
What You’ll Be Doing
Electrical Power System Design & Regulatory Compliance
1. Act as TDA for electrical and mechanical engineering,buildability,and compliance.
2. Design and dimension low-voltage electrical power systems for telecoms infrastructurein accordance withUK Building Regulations,BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations),and BS EN 50174 (ICT & Telecoms Cabling).
3. Develop large scale power solutions forMulti-Operatorandhigh-volumelow power solutions for Remote Unit locations and Smart City infrastructure on street furniture assets.
4. Ensure compatibility with MNO power requirements, including PSUs, BBUs and RRUs from Nokia,Ericsson,and legacy Huawei platforms.
5. Coordinate designs with host building electrical infrastructure, landlords, Distribution NetworkOperators,and site M&Erepresentatives.
6. Ensure designsconsiderBuilding Regulations, Fire Authority requirements and Telecoms Security Act whererequired.
Mechanical Cooling & Ventilation System Design
7. Design and size cooling and ventilation systems for telecoms environmentsin accordance with,UK Building Regulations Part F (Ventilation),Part L (Energy Efficiency),BS EN 378 (RefrigerationSystems andHeatPumps),andBS EN 16798 (Ventilation andIndoorEnvironmentalPerformance).
8. Develop cooling solutions supporting thermal loadsfrom 5kWup to 125kW, includingair conditioning systemsand forced air and hybrid cooling solutions.
9. Ensure cooling systems aresuitable for continuous 24/7 operation, appropriately resilient and maintainable, aligned to actual equipment heat dissipation and duty cycles.
10. Support energy efficiencyobjectiveswithout compromising network resilience.
Main Equipment Room & Base Station Hotel Fit-Outs
11. Lead the electrical and mechanical designand integrationof MERfit-outs, including power distribution and containment, cooling and ventilation systems, equipment layouts, accessclearances,and maintenance zones.
12. Integrate physical security measures, including controlled access, segregation of operator equipment and interfaces with monitoring systems.
13. Coordinate fire detection and life safety systems, ensuring alignment withBuilding fire strategies,BS 5839 (FireDetection andAlarmSystems)andBS 5266 (EmergencyLighting).
14. Ensureappropriate firestopping and compartmentation where services penetrate fire-rated boundaries.
15. Verifythe functionality,reliability,and safety of integrated electrical and mechanicalfit-outsthrough testing and troubleshooting.
Earthing, Bonding & Lightning Protection
16. Design earthing and bonding systemsin accordance with,BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations)andBS EN 50174 (ICT & Telecoms Cabling).
17. Design lightning protection systemsin accordance withBS EN 62305(LPS).
18. Ensure protection of personnel, equipment and service continuity for masts, rooftop structures and outdoor cabinets and exposed infrastructure.
Design Documentation, Specification & Technical Assurance
19. Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and produce fully detailed, construction-ready electrical and mechanical designs.
20. Prepare technical specification documents suitable for tender,procurement,and installation.
21. Develop Bills of Materials (BOMs) and support cost and value engineering reviews.
22. Review, check and technically assure designs produced by internal teams and third parties.
23. Support the Solution Design Manager with formal design assurance, technicalreviews,and sign-off activities.
24. Identity opportunities for innovation to drive efficiencies for Boldyn and our customers.
Safety, CDM & Statutory Compliance
25. Support CDM 2015 designer duties, ensuring design risks areidentified,mitigated,and communicatedto the Principal Designer.
26. Embed Safety by Design principles, ensuring systems are safe to install,operate,maintain,and decommission.
27. Support engagement with Building Control, fire authorities and other statutory stakeholders whererequired.
Standardisation & Internal Capability Development
28. Develop andmaintainstandard electrical and mechanical design templates, referencearchitectures,and specifications.
29. Standardise power and cooling solutions across site typologies to improve quality,consistency,and delivery efficiency.
30. Act as an internalM&Etechnical authority, reducing dependency on external consultants.
31. Support continuous improvement through lessons learned and best-practice application.
What You’ll Bring
Essential:
32. Minimum7years’M&Eexperience in telecoms, wireless or related infrastructure design.
33. Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering, Building ServicesEngineering,or a closely related discipline.
34. Strong working knowledge ofUK design standards, including:
35. BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations)
36. UK Building Regulations (Parts A, B, FandL)
37. BS 5266 and 5839
38. BS EN 378, BS EN 16798, BS EN50174,and BS EN 62305
39. Demonstrable experience designing three-phase power systems, resilient architectures and high-density cooling solutions for telecoms or mission-critical environments.
40. In-depth understanding of MNO equipment power and cooling requirements, includingTransmission kit,BBUs, RRUs and PSUs.
41. Proven capability producing technical specifications, detailed designs and BOMs.
42. Experience acting as an internal technical authority, engaging directly with building engineers, landlords and statutory bodies.
43. Skilled communicator with the ability to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders
Desirable
44. Chartered Engineer (CEng)or Incorporated Engineer (IEng).
45. Experience deliveringtelecommunication equipment rooms, MERsor base station hotelfit-outs.
46. Experience with street furniture cabinets and street lighting columns.
47. Experience in Earthing, Bonding & Lightning Protection
48. Formal training in critical infrastructure, firesystems,or mission-critical environments.
