Job Overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Main duties of the job

Southampton Children’s Hospital (SCH) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced paediatric oncology nurse to join our team of Clinical Nurse Specialists. This role will focus on leading and delivering high-quality education and specialist nursing in Paediatric Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment (SACT) across the Wessex network, supporting the safe and effective delivery of cancer treatment for Children and Young People (CYP).

The post holder will have primary responsibility for the provision and development of paediatric SACT education and specialist nursing practice, working autonomously as a core member of the multidisciplinary team. A key aspect of the role is to lead the Paediatric SACT Education Project for Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Units (POSCUs) across the Wessex network, enabling CYP with cancer to safely receive systemic anti-cancer treatments closer to home while maintaining the highest standards of care.

The successful candidate will support the upskilling of nursing and medical clinicians within POSCUs to implement and deliver infusional chemotherapy locally. This includes providing expert advice, education, and clinical guidance, as well as developing and implementing SACT training standards related to the safe administration of chemotherapy and the use of ambulatory infusion devices such as CADD pumps within both hospital and community settings.

Working in collaboration with the Principal Treatment Centre (PTC) at University Hospital Southampton, the post holder will ensure high standards of education and competency-based training for paediatric oncology nursing staff. This includes supporting eligible staff to undertake and successfully complete SACT competencies in line with the national standards set by the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG).

The role also requires close collaboration across professional groups, departments, and organisational boundaries to ensure patient-centred, seamless care for children and young people with cancer. The post holder will contribute to and lead nurse-led initiatives aligned with the Wessex Cancer Alliance (WCA), supporting the implementation of the ACCEND framework and embedding cancer capabilities within the appraisal and professional development processes of nurses working within POSCUs.

Through leadership, education, and clinical expertise, the role will play a key part in improving access to safe, high-quality cancer care for children and young people across the Wessex region.
