The post holder will be responsible for supporting effective governance and risk systems across maternity, neonatal and gynaecology services, ensuring communication systems, standards of care, and compliance with national and local standards. They will support the patient safety and quality improvement agenda, fulfill Duty of Candour requirements, provide feedback to families, lead audits and analysis, and support guideline development. They may provide clinical care as required and hold a key leadership role within the Governance Team, bringing specialist skills to the division’s quality and safety agenda.


Key Responsibilities

* Support quality and safety leads within the perinatal, neonatal and women’s services management team, ensuring governance arrangements and reporting structures are in place and effective.
* Utilise leadership, communication, influencing and negotiating skills to advise, support and guide the multidisciplinary team, ensuring that learning from incidents improves patient safety.
* Ensure compliance with all relevant trust-wide policies and guidelines within maternity, neonates, and gynaecology, ensuring that all safety alerts are disseminated timely and actions reported.
* Participate in clinical audits and make recommendations for practice.
* Attend clinical governance meetings and provide specialist patient safety and quality improvement advice.
* Review and develop information packages for service users.
* Escalate factors impeding high‑quality service delivery to quality and safety team leaders and senior management.
* Support benchmarking against national pathways, identify gaps and develop strategies for quality improvement.
* Analyse data from incidents, morbidity and mortality meetings, identify themes and trends requiring investigation and action.
* Contribute to written monthly, quarterly and annual reports on risk, incidents and complaints, identifying trends, making recommendations and tracking implementation.
* Maintain databases of adverse outcomes and service reviews.
* Identify, instigate and lead on specific quality improvement projects related to patient safety.
* Ensure compliance with Duty of Candour, providing support for clinical staff and ensuring Trust duties are met.
* Contribute to multidisciplinary morbidity and mortality reviews and disseminate learning and feedback.
* Liaise with Professional Midwifery and Nursing Advocates when appropriate, supporting staff involved in clinical incidents and investigations.
* Review and develop guidelines, aligning with local and national standards.
* Evaluate service‑user feedback and disseminate trends and themes through shared learning platforms.
* Network with other quality and safety midwives/nurses regionally and nationally to share best practice and learning.
* Maintain the highest level of confidentiality, exercising initiative in dealing with complex and distressing incidents.
* Maintain professional development to enable the delivery and evaluation of evidence‑based care.
* Work within the NMC Code, undertaking mandatory and priority training within required time‑scales.
* Participate in own and others’ appraisals, revalidate registration as directed.
* Collaborate with Research and Innovation to promote research, disseminate outcomes and support evidence‑based practice.
* Act to safeguard the health and wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults, adhering to safeguarding policies.
* Raise concerns about risk, malpractice or wrongdoing following the whistleblowing policy.
* Undertake duties on other wards or departments as service demands or patient needs require.
