The Emergency Department at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is recruiting for our CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) Fellowship Training Programme. This provides an opportunity for motivated doctors to join our dynamic Emergency Medicine team. Currently, our CESR workforce includes 5 fellows, and we aim to expand this team.
Depending on your level, you may start on our Tier 3 rota, gaining experience in both adult and paediatric ED within the first year. After 12 months, subject to review of your achievements with the CESR Lead, including your capacity as a senior decision maker, we can consider progressing you to the Tier 4 rota and planning rotations in other specialties.
If you have completed your IAC (anaesthesia rotation) elsewhere in the NHS and worked as a Senior Clinical Fellow, we can consider your entry at Tier 4 (registrar level). Please specify this in your application.
Initially, a 1-year contract will be offered, with the possibility of a 2-year extension and entry onto the CESR pathway after review.
As a Junior or Senior Clinical Fellow, you will have time to settle in and adapt to the department. After review and assessments, you may transition into the CESR programme, which typically takes around 4 years to complete. During this time, you will develop the necessary skills, knowledge, and evidence portfolio to meet the Emergency Medicine CCT curriculum. Rotations will include Acute Medicine, Intensive Care, Anaesthesia, and Paediatric Emergency Medicine, under the supervision of EM Consultants, who are present 24/7.
The service is based at the QMC campus, managing adult and paediatric emergencies on a 24/7 roster. Nottingham is a vibrant city known for sports, green spaces, and excellent educational and transport links. The ED is one of Europe’s busiest, with extensive facilities and a major trauma centre designation.
We seek candidates who meet the essential criteria outlined in the attached Job Description and Person Specification. The post is suitable for those pursuing a non-consultant career grade in Emergency Medicine or experienced Clinical Fellows/Registrars seeking to consolidate their experience in a Major Trauma Centre.
Essential requirements include:
* Completed MRCEM and IAC sign-off or full MRCEM
* Valid ALS and ATLS qualifications
* At least 5 years post-MBBS
* Minimum three years ED experience at CT3 level or above in the NHS
Once in the CESR role, support for Specialist Registration and planned secondments to acute medicine, ICU, anaesthesia, and paediatric emergency medicine are provided. The department has 24-hour consultant cover and has recently increased its workforce.
The NUH CESR programme has been running successfully for 6 years, with graduates progressing to consultant roles within the trust.
Responsibilities include managing ED operations, leading resuscitations, liaising with specialties, supervising junior staff, and contributing to departmental quality initiatives.
As a CESR Fellow, benefits include monthly teaching, workplace assessments, supervision, involvement in teaching, audit and QIP projects, acting up to consultant level towards the end of training, and support for consultant interview preparation.
This advert closes on Tuesday, 5 August 2025.
