Assistant Librarian UK Defence Academy, Shrivenham Full Time, 37 hours per week, Mon-Fri £25,000 - £32,000 (depending on experience) plus benefits At the UK Defence Academy, we have a fantastic opportunity for an Assistant Librarian to join the Learning and Teaching team, supporting the development of the Defence Learning Environment (DLE), promoting the library services and resources. In this role you will support the development, design and assessment of information literacy instruction, collaborating with academic and other course staff, managing library resources, providing reference and research support, and promoting information literacy skills across the contract. We welcome applicants with experience in library and information services and/or a strong academic background. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team environment, as well as independently when required. Strong organisational skills, a proactive approach, and a commitment to delivering and continuously improving high-quality library services are essential. Main Accountabilities: Manage the DLE and SharePoint sites which promote the library services and resources Develop and manage collections of physical and digital resources, including books, journals, databases, multimedia and open access materials Create, maintain and manage electronic and printed information resources Design and deliver information literacy and digital skills sessions for students, researchers and academic staff, both in person and online Integrate emerging technologies, such as ai and research analytics tools, to support learning and teaching Collaborate with academic departments to embed information literacy skills into the curriculum and contribute to course design Manage and support the provision of reading lists, including resource availability, copyright compliance and loan periods Support researchers with complex literature searches, reviews and reference management tools Build and maintain effective working relationships with academic staff and course members, as well as external bodies such as the cla Oversee budgets and resource purchasing for specific subject areas Keep up-to-date with new technology and information literacy developments affecting libraries and higher education, and with team members and the library management team identify opportunities for innovation and change in this area Maintain a high level of continuing professional development, including using internal and external networks and events to maintain up-to-date knowledge Provide training to library staff as necessary Lead on or participate in projects and cross team working groups, as appropriate As required, the post holder will be expected to carry out any other reasonable duties for which they are trained and competent and which fall within the general scope of the post and grade Undertake enquiry desk support for staff and students,as appropriate to the workload, including guidance in using the library catalogue, electronic resources and library equipment What you need to do the role? Essential - educated to degree level. Essential - professional Library qualification, which can include Chartered Status of CILIP (or willingness to work towards) Desirable – teaching qualification Evidence of continuing professional development Experience of working in an academic or research library/information service Experience of teaching and the support of learning Strong customer service and interpersonal skills, with the ability to support a diverse academic community Confidence in building collaborative relationships with students, academic staff, researchers and senior defence academy stakeholders Strong it and electronic resources management skills Digital literacy and an awareness of emerging technologies such as ai, data analysis tools, and open research platforms Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to present information to different audiences Information and research skills A flexible and adaptable approach to work Accuracy and attention to detail Negotiation and problem-solving skills The ability to work collaboratively as part of a team but also independently Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage your time effectively to meet deadlines Logical thinking and analytical skills for evaluating resources and user needs Self-motivation and the ability to work proactively, particularly when managing subject responsibilities or service areas An appreciation of the pressures and demands within an academic work environment Initiative and the ability to lead and manage projects Good working knowledge of copyright law Strong cultural awareness Please note you must be able to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance to be eligible for this role.
