We're supporting a leading infrastructure engineering business delivering critical transmission and grid upgrade projects across the UK.
With a strong pipeline of 132kV and 400kV projects, they are expanding their design capability and looking to bring in an experienced Overhead Line (OHL) Design Engineer.
This is an opportunity to work on major grid infrastructure programmes that are directly supporting the UK's transition to a more resilient, low-carbon energy system.
The Opportunity
You'll play a key role in the design and delivery of high-voltage overhead line projects, working across the full lifecycle from concept through to construction support.
This role would suit someone who is confident working within regulated environments, understands the technical and compliance requirements of transmission networks, and enjoys solving complex engineering challenges.
What You'll Be Doing
* Delivering OHL designs for 132kV and 400kV transmission lines
* Producing and reviewing:
* Route corridor designs
* Tower spotting and profiles
* Foundation design inputs
* Clearances and statutory compliance
* Carrying out line design calculations (mechanical, loading, sag & tension)
* Supporting FEED studies, detailed design, and construction phases
* Coordinating with:
* Civil / geotechnical teams
* Environmental & planning stakeholders
* DNOs / TOs / National Grid
* Supporting design assurance and technical reviews
* Providing technical input during installation and commissioning phases
What We're Looking For
* Experience in overhead line design (132kV+ ideally up to 400kV)
* Strong understanding of:
* Line design principles
* Sag & tension calculations
* Clearance requirements
* Experience working on transmission or large-scale distribution projects
* Familiarity with UK grid standards and regulatory requirements
* Ability to work independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams
Bonus Experience
* Experience with software such as PLS-CADD, Tower, or equivalent
* Background working with National Grid, SSE, Scottish Power, or similar
* Chartered or working towards (CEng / IEng)
* Exposure to foundation or structural design coordination
Why This Role?
* Work on nationally significant transmission projects
* Join a business with a strong secured pipeline (not speculative hiring)
* Opportunity to step into senior / lead responsibilities over time
* Flexible working with a focus on output, not presenteeism
