Job Description

Learning Support Assistant (LSA) - Year 1 Phonics & Group Intervention Specialist

About the School

A welcoming, inclusive, and well-led primary school in Walthamstow is seeking two experienced and proactive Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) to join their Year 1 team. This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals who are passionate about early literacy development and want to play a key role in helping young learners thrive.

Having worked closely with this school for over three years, we can confidently say they offer a supportive environment where LSAs are truly valued and empowered to make a difference.

About the Role

These positions focus on Group Intervention and Phonics Support within Year 1. You will work with small groups of 3-6 children, delivering tailored sessions aimed at closing learning gaps and reinforcing foundational reading and writing skills.

You will not be expected to reinvent the wheel - clear guidance, plans, and resources will be provided - but your ability to take initiative and adapt on the go will be key to your success.

Key Responsibilities

Group Intervention:

* Run short, structured sessions with small groups outside the main classroom or in a quiet area.
* Follow intervention plans provided by the class teacher or SENCo.
* Track student progress and provide quick but meaningful feedback.
* Be responsive to children's individual learning needs during sessions.

Phonics Support:

* Deliver engaging phonics sessions, focusing on early sounds and word-building (e.g. Set 2 phonics: 'ay', 'ee').
* Use phonics resources such as flashcards, sound mats, blending/segmenting games, and interactive tools.
* Support reading and writing activities through sound recognition and word construction.
* Make phonics learning fun and accessible through creative approaches.

Who This Role is For

The school is looking for LSAs who:

Take Initiative - You don't wait to be told; you step in when you see a child needs help, a resource needs prepping, or a task needs doing.

Know the Basics Well - You come in with a working knowledge of phonics, behaviour management, and safeguarding.

Are Flexible and Fast-Paced - You can confidently switch between working one-on-one, leading a group, or supporting the class teacher - often at short notice.

Have High Expectations - You believe all children can achieve and bring positive energy to the classroom each day.

Essential Requirements

* Previous experience working with children in a school or educational setting.
* Strong understanding of phonics instruction (e.g., Read Write Inc., Letters and Sounds, or similar).
* Familiarity with group interventions or targeted support strategies.
* Ability to manage behaviour in a positive and proactive way.
* Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Desirable (but not essential)

* Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification.
* Experience in KS1 (particularly Year 1).
* Knowledge of SEN or EAL support strategies.
* Previous experience tracking pupil progress or providing feedback to teachers.

Why Apply?

* Be part of a dynamic, inclusive, and values-driven school.
* Make a tangible impact on children's early education and literacy development.
* Work in a setting that trusts and empowers support staff.
* Potential for long-term or permanent placement.

How to Apply

If you're a confident, proactive, and experienced LSA ready to hit the ground running in a supportive Year 1 team, we'd love to hear from you.

Apply now with your CV and a brief cover note outlining your suitability for this role.

For more information, get in touch directly - we're happy to answer any questions you have before you apply.

This school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff to share this commitment. An enhanced DBS check and reference checks will be required prior to appointment.
