Job Summary
This is a permanent Consultant post in Medical or Clinical Oncology based at Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust, with occasional duties at Kettering General Hospital as part of the wider University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN) NHS Group. The post offers the opportunity to specialise in one or more tumour sites including Breast, Lung and Thoracic, Lower Gastrointestinal, Gynaecological, Urological, Lymphoma, Germ Cell, GIST, Sarcoma, Cancers of Unknown Primary (CUP), and Acute Oncology within a fully integrated, multidisciplinary service.
The department encourages active involvement in advanced treatment techniques, service development, research, clinical trials, and education, with access to modern facilities including state‑of‑the‑art radiotherapy, systemic anti‑cancer therapy suites, and support from expanded clinical roles such as Consultant Radiographers, Pharmacists, and Nurse Specialists.
It is essential that the post‑holder:
* Holds the MRCP (UK) or an equivalent qualification.
* Is on the GMC specialist register, or will obtain a relevant CCT within 6 months of interview.
This post represents an excellent opportunity for a motivated consultant to develop a specialist portfolio, contribute to service innovation, and participate in academic and clinical leadership within a supportive, forward‑looking oncology service.
JD pending RCP approval.
Main Duties of the Job
The post is initially structured as 10 Programmed Activities (PAs):
* 8.5 PAs for Direct Clinical Care (DCC)
* 1.5 PAs for Supporting Professional Activities (SPA)
* 1 in 12 on‑call commitments
The timetable is provided as a broad outline; the final schedule will be agreed with the post‑holder on appointment. As the service grows, the post‑holder will be expected to work flexibly in line with the new Consultant Contract, adapting to the evolving needs of the department.
Most consultants dedicate 1.5 PAs to SPA, supporting activities such as revalidation, appraisal, audit, CPD, mortality and morbidity meetings, and mandatory training. Additional opportunities include Clinical Lead roles, departmental initiatives, and serving as a Clinical Supervisor for trainees. SPA allocation and remuneration will be adjusted appropriately.
The post offers a unique opportunity to shape and develop the oncology service, contribute to multidisciplinary care, research, and education, and build a specialist portfolio within a supportive, forward‑looking team.
