The post-holder will be a key member of the Orthopaedic Education and Follow-Up service, delivering high-quality assessment, education, and postoperative review for patients undergoing hip and knee arthroplasty. The role supports the optimisation of patient outcomes through evidence-based practice, in line with GIRFT, NICE, and local clinical pathways. The practitioner will lead the coordination of virtual and in-person education, undertake postoperative assessments, and contribute to service evaluation and improvement initiatives across the orthopaedic pathway.

This role is open to Registered Nurses, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, and other relevant AHPs with appropriate training and experience.

Main duties of the job

To take the clinical lead in the assessment, review, and management of patients attending the Orthopaedic Education and Follow-Up Clinic, including 2- and 6-week postoperative appointments following hip and knee arthroplasty. Performing comprehensive clinical assessments, including wound reviews, mobility assessments, pain management review, functional assessment, and monitoring for postoperative complications.

To Lead and coordinate pre-operative orthopaedic education processes, including scheduling and booking patients into virtual education classes.

To support clinically on the orthopaedics wards, providing comprehensive orthopaedic knowledge to guide recovery and rehabilitation, escalating or referring onward to Orthopaedic Consultants, Physiotherapy, community services, or other specialties when required.

To participate in service evaluation, audit, and on-going quality improvement projects.

To be able to travel and work across site on both outpatient clinic and ward setting, including Winchester, Andover and Basingstoke. The post-holder will be required to work flexibly as part of a 7-day service. Working hours will include extended shift patterns, ranging from 08.00 – 18.00 and extended 12-hour shift patterns (e.g. 07.30 – 20.00) to meet service needs.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria

1. Evidence of Continued Professional Development (CPD)clearly recorded for professional profile
2. Evidence of significant post registration clinical work experience
3. Understanding of Health Environment policies and legislation including Clinical, HR, E&D, Governance
4. Design and delivery of effective organisation wide training programmes and/or interventions
5. Experience of staff supervision and mentorship including, employee relations, performance, conduct and training needs analysis
6. Adherence to current statutory requirements standards and regulations
7. Awareness of local and national agenda within the speciality.

Desirable criteria

8. Experience of project management for policy development for large scale projects
9. Evidence of implementing significant changes or service developments that promotes good practice
10. Experience of staff supervision including workforce budgets and staff development planning
11. Involvement in project team for developing and implementing departmental business plans and/or organisation wide developments

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria

12. Professional UK registration e.g. NMC, HPC
13. Able to Demonstrate a good English language both written and verbal
14. Degree level education or equivalent knowledge and skills gained through any combination of alternative study, or employment experience
15. Post registration qualification(s) in field of expertise
16. Project management learning and/or development
17. Computer literate
18. Teaching and Assessing qualification or equivalent study or work experience.

Desirable criteria

19. Additional Post graduate learning in specialist field including master’s degree or working towards
20. Member of relevant special interest group
21. Communication skills learning and development
22. Level 3 Certificate/Diploma in management and leadership, or equivalent NVQ 3

23. Demonstrate clinical skills relevant to the speciality and behaviours aligned with Trust values
24. Able to plan and manage own workload and support others in a evolving and changing environment
25. Able to communicate complex/ senitive information effectively, work across multi-disciplinary teams, and facilitate learning sessions
26. Understands clinical governance, audit and quality improvement; applies equality, diversity and inclusion principles in practice
27. Confident in using, analysing and interpreting data and digital systems

28. Possesses advanced or specialist clinical skills within the relevant speciality
29. Able to approach problems form unique or alternative perspective
30. Customer service experience i.e. dealing with complaints
