Job overview

Royal London Hospital is looking to recruit a Healthcare Support Worker (HCA) Band 3 who will work at Barkantine Birth Centre at Royal London Hospital. This post is open to individuals who are both experienced Healthcare Support Workers and those new to care. Individuals that are new to care will receive support to complete the Band 3 competencies and progress into a Band 3 role within six months upon successful completion of all required competencies.

We are looking for compassionate and motivated individuals who are passionate about delivering high-quality, person-centred care in a hospital setting. The role involves undertaking a range of delegated clinical tasks, such as:

1. Patient observations (e.g., monitoring vital signs)
2. Undertaking limited range of delegated duties (e.g. maternal and newborn basic observations, urinalysis and blood glucose monitoring, venepuncture and cannulation)
3. Strong teamworking and communication skills are essential to ensure the comfort, wellbeing, and safety of our patients.
4. Communicate clearly, effectively and appropriately with the multidisciplinary team, patients and their family/visitors/carers
5. Respond appropriately to queries, take phone messages, and pass on written and verbal information to patients
6. Provide basic information to patients, family/visitors/carers and colleagues
7. Aware of the importance of accurate documentation and contribute to reports of patients’ activity and progress
8. Assist in maintaining a clean environment that is conducive to safe practice & Clean patient equipment as required
9. Summon immediate help for any emergency and take appropriate action to contain it
10. Undertake administrative and clerical tasks associated with patient care to facilitate the smooth running of the ward/department
11. Maintain adequate levels of stock, equipment and materials and facilitate the efficient, effective use of resources; report when availability falls below an acceptable standard or level
12. Work co-operatively as part of the multi-disciplinary team, helping nursing,

midwifery and other clinical staff in routine work associated with patient care

13. Chaperone patients
14. Alert registered staff promptly of changes in the patient’s condition or any potential risks
15. Set up specialist instruments and clinical equipment
16. Able to use IT (Information Technology) at a basic level to input and retrieve information
17. Competence in appropriate use of electronic patient records following training

They have experience of working in a team, to ensure the comfort, wellbeing and safety of our patients.

The postholder will work within the Maternity department – Barkantine Birth Centre – which is an outpatient community centre.

Barts Health has a diverse and busy service that may require staff to be flexible in their working. The post holder will be required to work within a challenging clinical environment and may undertake shift work which may include weekends.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be an integral part of the nursing team actively taking part in meeting the needs of patients and of the service in accordance with agreed standards under direct supervision of the registered nurse. The post holder will continue to develop essential competencies though training and practice to ensure safety and quality are the priority.

This post attracts individuals who are new to care. You will receive support to complete the Band 3 competencies and progress into a Band 3 role within 6 months upon successful completion of all required competencies; until then, you will be placed at a Band 2 salary.

18. Completion of L3 Care Certificate or equivalent experience of undertaking short courses related to patient/clinical care duties.
19. Basic literacy and numeracy skills (English and Math’s GCSEs or equivalent.)
20. Evidence of ongoing personal and professional development

21. L3 HCSW apprenticeship

Experience

22. Demonstrable experience of working in a clinical healthcare setting.
23. Experience of dealing with the public.

Knowledge

Essential criteria

24. Awareness of health and safety at work. e.g: manual handling skills, infection control measures.
25. Ability to collect and exchange factual information and data to the multidisciplinary team and ensure data accuracy.
