Job overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic doctor to join our existing group of Cardiac Surgical Specialist Registrars (SpR). You will be expected to be involved fully in our rolling on-call rota based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital and will have equal access to training opportunities in clinics, theatres and wards. Post-holders will need to be enthusiastic to learn and be involved in all aspects of the department’s work. You will be expected to proactively contribute to the department's research activities which are regionally renowned. The department will support all attempts to be involved or initiate research projects to completion and publication

Main duties of the job
Provisional Timetable (generic)
The day to day working pattern is incorporates covering the surgical theatres and the cardiac ICU, wards and outpatient clinics.
Each registrar will be on call on a 1:6 rota. The rota is non-resident overnight. Immediate care is provided by a team of Advanced Care practitioners (ACPs).
Each registrar will usually have 2-3 operating days per week.
Outpatient clinics are usually covered by the SpR allocated to that consultant.
Formal teaching
All trainees are encouraged to participate in weekly educational meetings/journal club. The teaching program is organised by the allocated trainee.
Supervision
Alltrainees are allocated a clinical supervisor (CS).
Each trainee is required to produce a personal development plan annually, which should be discussed with their CS and as a result agreed targets and objectives set.
Meetings with the CS should be undertaken on a six-monthly basis and a formal report signed by the trainee and supervisor to be submitted to the Surgical lead. In addition, for each block the trainee should meet with the consultant for whom they are working to discuss the objectives for the forthcoming period.
Local Faculty Group
There is a robust process in place to assess the progress of trainees. A Local Faculty Group has been established which meets biannually. All registrars are expected to participate.

Experience/ Qualifications
* Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
* Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent
* Higher Degree

* Understanding of clinical risk management
* An ability to communicate well with patients and staff.
* 12 months experience as Registrar in cardiac surgery
* 12 Months Experience as Registrar in Cardiac Surgery in UK
Knowledge
* Breadth of experience in and outside specialty

* Experience and ability to work in multi-professional teams
* Understanding of: NHS / Clinical governance / Resource constraints
* Evidence of managerial skills: Achievements / Course attended
Teaching Skills
