Role Summary
We are seeking a reliable and physically capable Grounds Maintenance Operative to undertake a wide range of outdoor operational duties. This role involves working in all weather conditions and includes driving, equipment use, and contributing to the security and upkeep of council premises.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Duties
* Carry out general and ad-hoc specialist grounds maintenance tasks as directed by management.
* Operate vehicles (with or without trailers), ride-ons, and both manual and powered equipment.
* Conduct daily vehicle checks and report any issues to management.
Equipment & Site Security
* Take responsibility for the safe use, maintenance, and minor repair of machinery and tools.
* Ensure the security of vehicles, tools, and sites; lock and unlock council buildings as needed.
Stock Monitoring
* Monitor fuel stock levels in remote depots and liaise with teams to ensure sufficient supply.
Customer Interaction
* Engage with members of the public courteously and positively, reporting any service issues to your line manager.
Work Delivery
* Work to set schedules and adapt to priority changes as instructed by your manager.
* Demonstrate and promote safe working practices to colleagues, apprentices, and trainees.
Standards & Compliance
* Adhere to health and safety, customer care, and dignity at work policies.
* Support service performance by promoting quality and continuous improvement.
* Use ICT systems to log tasks and support service delivery.
Essential Criteria
Education & Training
* GCSEs (2 or more) or equivalent.
* Manual Handling, Needle Stick, IOSH Working Safely (Desirable).
* Valid UK driving licence: Category B or B+E, or C1 or C1+E (Essential).
Experience
* Experience working independently and as part of a team.
* Previous grounds maintenance experience.
* Strong understanding of health and safety procedures.
Knowledge
* Awareness of individual/team goals and their link to broader organisational objectives.
* Understanding of relevant policies and procedures to ensure safety and dignity.
Skills & Abilities
* Competent in using grounds maintenance tools and equipment.
* Strong customer service and communication skills.
* Able to interpret and act on various types of instructions.
* Reliable team player with a proactive attitude.
* Able to identify and suggest improvements to work processes.
* Capable of managing own workload and resolving daily operational issues.
* Sound knowledge and application of health and safety practices.
Additional Requirements
* Flexibility to work as required by operational needs.
* Willingness to undertake relevant training and CPD.
* Commitment to the councils values and behaviours.
* Ability to travel for work purposes.
