West Suffolk Professionals (WSP) recruit and manage all temporary staff within the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.
We currently seek Bank General Porters to provide flexible cover for our Newmarket Hospital site. We are looking to cover weekday shifts with the possibility of some weekend working being available.
At West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, Porters are essential members of staff.
Moving patients and equipment is just part of the job. Our Porters also liaise with and support other teams, helping in whatever way possible with the aim to always provide the best possible service for our patients.
Main duties of the job
General Porters are required to assist with day-to-day duties that are essential to the smooth running of the hospital. These duties include but are not limited to:
* Transportation of patients to and from wards and departments.
* Delivery and collection of essential items within the hospital grounds, which will require interpersonal skills and the ability to carry out manual handling tasks.
* Working with a variety of people including staff at all levels, patients and visitors.
Applicants must have good customer service and communication skills coupled with a professional appearance which is appropriate to a front of house role.
Full training is provided and a health assessment will be required before becoming a team member.

Job Summary:
The successful candidate will provide flexible Bank support to the current team delivering general Portering services at Newmarket Hospital and the wider West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.
Skills:
Interpersonal skills i.e., making good contact with people and establishing effective working relationships with all wards and departments.
Ability to perform manual tasks i.e., tug driving, changing cylinders, the movement of cylinders, the movement of beds and wheelchairs.
Deployment:
The post holder would normally be designated to work Bank shifts in the Newmarket Hospital Portering Service, however opportunities to work Bank shifts at the West Suffolk Hospital site may also be available.
Training will be provided, with an expectation that the post holder must be prepared to carry out General Porter duties and any other duties, as directed by the Portering and Security Manager and/or Portering Supervisor. Task deployment would be commensurate with appropriate training.

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
Person Specification
Education & Qualifications
* GCSE (or equivalent) qualifications to demonstrate a good standard of general education.
* Basic skills in literacy and numeracy.
* NVQ Level 2 in Portering; or willing to work towards
Experience & Knowledge
* Experience of providing high quality customer service.
* Proven ability to work without supervision.
* Previous experience of working in a hospital environment.
Skills & Abilities
* Good communication and interpersonal skills.
* Able to drive tugs, move laundry bags and carry out all other manual handling tasks as required.
* Proven track record of reliability, punctuality, trustworthiness and good attention to detail.
* Able to work using own initiative.
Personal Qualities
* Flexible approach to working hours with the ability to work an alternating shift pattern.
* Evidence of good attendance and timekeeping.
