Newport City Council has sound finances, underpinned by a robust revenue budget and good levels of reserves. The Welsh & Local Government sector across Wales work well together, in particular the finance function which has a mature relationship.
This role is the perfect opportunity for someone who wants to develop their career and aspire to be a Director of Finance in the future. The role is the Deputy s151 officer and Newport City Council is large enough to provide the challenges and opportunities for you to develop your skills and experience across all areas of Local Government finance whilst small enough to see the big picture and get involved in the key agenda’s.
These opportunities not only include the usual areas such as Medium-Term Financial Planning and supporting transformation projects; but also, being part of exciting projects around city centre regeneration, an ambitious school buildings programme and regional working, to name a few.
The post is a member of the Finance Management Team and the Council’s wider Managers Network. They will also represent the Council in regional and all-Wales networks, in both project and functional groups.
We’re looking for an experienced finance professional who demonstrates good career progression and experience to date and wants to move into a central role, managing the function on a day-to-day basis. We’re not expecting anyone to know all aspects of the role but a willingness and ability to quickly learn and develop is important in order to be effective and you’ll be well supported to do this.
