The role of a Teaching Assistant (TA) in a primary school is vital in supporting both teachers and pupils to ensure a positive and effective learning environment. Key Responsibilities Are Supporting Pupils' Learning Assisting individual students or small groups with classwork. Helping pupils who need extra support, such as those with special educational needs (SEN) or English as an additional language (EAL). Encouraging engagement, focus, and participation during lessons. Working with the Class Teacher Helping the teacher prepare learning materials and classroom resources. Encouraging good behaviour and helping to manage classroom discipline. Creating a Safe and Supportive Environment Ensuring the classroom is welcoming and conducive to learning. Attending to the emotional, social, and physical needs of pupils. Supervising pupils during non-teaching times such as breaktime, or lunchtime. Administrative and Organisational Tasks Assisting with record-keeping, such as tracking pupil progress or attendance. Organising displays of pupils’ work or classroom resources. Supporting Inclusion Aiding children with additional learning needs to participate fully in school life. Using adapted materials or strategies tailored to pupils’ individual needs.
