The Mission of the School of Health Sciences is:

To champion and promote excellent medical, health and social care science, research, scholarship, teaching and learning, quality and values with people who use services, practitioners and stakeholders. To promote language and cultural competence relevant to local, national and international partners, and to provide an inclusive culture and environment for staff and students within the School.

• To be forward looking and sustainable and aspire to achieving the University's Strategy 2030 pillars and themes and the University's Global Framework.

• To prepare and support medical, health and social care practitioners to engage in lifelong learning and reflective practice that will promote excellent standards in evidence-based practice.

• To work in partnership with people who use services, medical, health and social care providers and agencies within Wales, but also cross-border, nationally and internationally on medical, health and social care research, science, education, and scholarship.

• To maintain excellence in medical, health and social care teaching, which is informed by research and coproduced by staff, students, service users and clinicians, whilst maintaining societal shared values and enhancing opportunities for employability.

• To champion and promote scholarship, science and research applied to medical, health and social care policy and practice, in order to evaluate, develop and, wherever possible, improve professional practice.

• To instil language and cultural competence in medical, health and social care practitioners. To embed language and cultural awareness in medical, health and social care research and practice and respond sensitively to the language needs of Welsh speakers.

• To lead research of the highest standard that improves lives and healthcare services regionally, nationally and globally.

Purpose of the Job

The post will provide research support to a project funded by the All-Wales Policing Academic Collaboration which will explore public attitudes and experiences of stop and search in Wales. The project is a collaboration with Public Health Wales and police across Wales. It seeks to build the evidence base on public perceptions of, and attitudes towards, stop and search practices, as well as trust in the police. The research aims not only to improve relationships between police and communities, but also to create a sustainable framework for ongoing collaboration.

The post-holder will support the development and implementation of the project, with duties including ethical approval, quantitative data analysis, qualitative research and analyses, study co-ordination and supporting the team with report/paper writing.

The project is part of a programme of work being implemented by the Public Health Collaborating Unit; a Public Health/Academic collaborative funded by Public Health Wales. The post holder will be part of the School of Health at Bangor University and based in their academic offices in Wrexham.

The work plan will be led by Dr Kat Ford at Bangor University.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• To support the research team in the collection and analysis of qualitative data. This may include: drafting ethical applications / data collection / data management / data analyses / preparation of research outputs.

• To support the research team in the analysis of quantitative data. This may include: data management / data coding / data analyses / preparation of tables and figures for research outputs.

• To contribute to the development of research outcomes. This may include: supporting the production of reports and journal publications / helping in the preparation of materials for presentation to conferences / liaising with external providers for design and translation of research outcomes.

• To assist and support the administration of the project. This may include; arranging research related meetings / circulating information / minute taking / preparing reports for funders.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training

Essential :

• Postgraduate degree with a strong research component in a health, public health or other scientific, psychological or sociological subject.

Experience/Knowledge

Essential :

· Previous experience of mixed-methods research.

· Previous experience of working in applied public health research.

· Knowledge and interest in specific areas related to the post • Understanding and application of research and information governance processes, policies and procedures.

Skills/Abilities

Essential :

· Excellent verbal and written skills.

• Good computer skills, including MS Office, PowerPoint, and Excel.

• Ability to use a range of research related software (e.g. SPSS).

· Ability to prioritise workload and work to deadlines.

· Demonstrate ability to work as part of a team.

Desirable :

• Attention to detail and proof-reading skills.

• Presentation skills.

Other

Desirable :

• Able to work flexible hours when required.

• The ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh is desirable for this role. If applicants are not able to speak / write in Welsh at present, there are many opportunities to learn if the successful candidate wishes to do so.
