Role Summary As a Passive Fire Protection Operative, you will be responsible for inspecting, testing, and maintaining fire dampers in ventilation systems to ensure compliance with UK regulations, particularly working towards the DW145 specification (Guide to Good Practice for the Installation of Fire and Smoke Dampers) published by the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA). This hands-on role involves site visits to various buildings, performing drop tests, functional checks, and remedial work where necessary. You will play a critical part in enhancing building safety by verifying that dampers operate correctly to contain fire. The position demands flexibility due to travel requirements, with a focus on delivering high-quality service to clients in sectors such as healthcare, education, and commercial properties. Key Responsibilities Conduct thorough inspections and testing of fire dampers in accordance with DW145 guidelines, BS EN 1366-2 standards, and other relevant UK regulations (e.g., Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005). Perform drop tests and visual assessments to confirm damper functionality, ensuring they close and are well-maintained. Identify and carry out basic remedial works on faulty dampers, including cleaning, installation of access doors, and replacement of broken/faulty fusible links. Prepare detailed reports on test results using our live reporting software system, including recommendations for maintenance or replacement, and maintain accurate records for compliance audits. Liaise with site managers, building owners, and engineering teams to gain access to closed areas and minimise disruption. Ensure all work adheres to health and safety protocols, including working at heights and in confined spaces. Travel to multiple sites across the UK. Be comfortable working toward targets. Essential Requirements Valid UK driving licence (clean preferred, as company vehicles may be provided). Ability to work independently in a field-based environment, with excellent organisational and time-management skills. Physical fitness to handle manual tasks, including accessing dampers in ductwork. Willingness to travel and stay away from home during the week where required. Desirable Skills and Experience Knowledge of DW145 specifications and experience working towards these regulations in fire damper installation, testing, and maintenance. Relevant qualification in fire damper testing, such as accreditation from the Institute of Fire Safety Managers (IFSM), CITB, City & Guilds (C&G), or equivalent BESA-recognized certification. CSCS card or equivalent health and safety certification. Familiarity with power tools. Confidence and experience working at height, including working from ladders as this is a prominent aspect of the role. PASMA and IPAF certification.
